A dude in a He-Man S&M getup, with enhanced senses plus wings and a mace made of "Nth metal", a super-metal that can defy gravity and repel the supernatural, plus whatever else the writer needs it to do that issue. When he's on the Justice League he's usually the one most likely to punch first and ask questions later and the most willing to kill. Frequently he has a girlfriend/counterpart named '''Hawkgirl.'''

That's literally all we can say that's common to every version of Hawkman because there's been so goddamn many of them. Seriously, he's been a reincarnated Egyptian, a lawman from the planet Thanagar, the avatar of a bloodthirsty hawk-god, and sometimes more than one of those at once, and they're ''all'' connected by a mix of reincarnation and the aforementioned hawk-god. He's the personification of the continuity clusterfucks that bedevil modern comics, and the fact that the biggest Hawkman fansite [https://www.hawkworld.org/p/hawkman-and-hawkgirl-are-two-of-most.html claims] "Hawkman's history isn't that confusing" in a five-thousand-word article about it speaks volumes. Despite this he still has an enduring fanbase thanks to his no-nonsense pulp appeal and [[Barbarian|ability to smack uppity wizards down with juidicious use of mace to the head]].
