==Other Depictions of The Land of Wonder, Magic and Misery== Although not canon in the slightest, there's a game Shadow of Mordor which showcases the attempt by Gondor (or at least allies) to colonise Mordor. As a volcanic depression it was full of essential agricultural minerals like phosphorus. Although there was some leftover toxicity as well. The game's authors used pictures of recovering Mount St. Helens as a template. Mordor is a major setting in the Rings of Power. Mordor was once known as the Southlands, a lush land rich in vegetation and original home of hobbits. Sauron had directed the armies of Melkor to flee to the Southlands after the War of Wrath, however, and they spend many decades hiding from the elves, men, and hobbits that lived there. This wasn't to say Sauron wasn't in charge; he created the identity of the "King that was promised" to the Men of the Southlands and assumed the role until he was usurped by Adar, a boldog of Melkor and father of the orc race. While Sauron went into exile, Adar continued his plans in the hopes of turning Mordor into a new home for the orcs, where none would need walk in fear of the sun. To this end, Adar recovered the Sword of Sauron, a mystic sword forged by Melkor himself, and used it to break open a dam and direct the waters of a river into the gullet of Mount Doom, triggering its eruption and covering the entire Southlands in ash. This new land would be called Mordor by the screenwriters.
