==Predecessor==
If you want something a little bit more accessible, before Nagano made FFS he produced a mecha anime called "Heavy Metal L-Gaim" alongside Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. It's about a man named Daba Myroad piloting a remnant of his lost clan, the L-Gaim, to rebel against the Posaidal empire. Basically, Original Trilogy [[Star Wars]] as a mecha show, except slightly funnier. Complete with lightsabers and weird spirit shit. And all the mecha are called [[Awesome|Heavy Metals]].

The character and mecha designs, as well as some terminology like "headliners", "buster launchers" and more, have their genesis in L-Gaim. Amaterasu's alias, Ladios Sopp, is taken from Posaidal. Spiritually and thematically, you could say Five Star Stories is a successor to L-Gaim, taking the concepts of the show and expanding the rebellion war story into a mythological and political epic. 

Because L-Gaim isn't solely Nagano's it also has more leeway in appearances. Daba and his mech, its upgrade the L-Gaim Mk2 and the entire storyline associated with the anime have appeared in crossovers such as Super Robot Wars and Another Century's Episode.
