Well, the bleaching didn't kill them off but it certainly left its mark.  The gnomish species is now divided.  [[Bleachling]] gnomes are immune to the effects the bleaching (having succumbed and survived) and this immunity is a dominant gene that passes on.  However they are a race apart both in appearance and temperament, lacking the pigmentation and manic enthusiasm of feychild gnomes who remain consumed by their desire for adventure and experiences to stave off the bleaching.  

But the advent of drift travel has brought a third form of gnome, the [[Driftborn]].  Driftborn gnomes do not appear to succumb to the bleaching, but their natural pigmentation has become iridescent from long exposure to the drift, and their bodies and senses have adapted to life in space.
