==Deadlands: Lost Colony== There are only two Lost Colony books - the Corebook and the Companion - and so all of the Arcane Backgrounds are found in the Corebook. ===Mutes=== The primary spellcaster of the settlers of the Lost Colony of Banshee, Mutes are descendants of the Junkers. They're [[cyborg]]s outfitted with an implanted sachet of nanobots (which themselves are physical hosts for tech-spirits), a cybernetic eye that they use to "see" and control them, a data port to upload programming schematics to their nanobots, and the all-important HG Siphon, which lets the Mute tap into the Hunting Ground and draw upon raw arcane energy to power the nanobots. Their name comes from their power; they are the [[Transmuter]]s of the Deadlands universe, deploying nanobot swarms to break down raw materials - which can be anything from literal piles of unworked resources to just items you don't need - and restructure those materials on the molecular level to build whatever they want from the component material. So long as they have the correct schematics uploaded, that is - a Mute can't just will their nanobots to fix a broken gun if they don't have the schematics for what a gun should look like to tell the little bots the issue. They can also do a little grey goo scenario if they feel so inclined, using their nanobots to dissassemble inconvenient people in hand to hand combat. The downside is that the person who creates Mutes also sets up a backdoor into their brains, as she plans to ultimately use this to assemble an army of brainwashed cyborgs - oh, yes, we didn't mention that as the nanobots seize more mental control over their host, they also increasingly rebuild them into a cyborg? ===Anouk Shaman=== Banshee's replacement for the Indian Shaman of the Weird West, Anouk Shamans are the healers, mystics and historians of the Anouk tribes, and are able to draw upon the living energies of the planet. Functionally, they work much closer to Hucksters than anything; before casting a spell, they need to make an Energy Tap skill check, representing if they can actually draw the necessary mojo from the planet to fuel their spell, and then spend Strain. No complex system of favors here! The only patron that Anouk shamans have is Banshee herself, and she's happy enough to share her power with those who ask her nicely. They do get a nice mixture of utility and even some offensive spells, like chucking lightning at people. ===Guardian of Banshee=== Not actually an Arcane Background, but close enough that it can go here. When a sufficiently heroic anouk or human dies on Banshee, there's a chance that the living planet will revive them to battle the forces of evil threatening the Lost Colony. Unlike a [[Harrowed]], Guardians aren't [[undead]] - they're truly alive, but with some extra abilities. They're supernaturally tougher, they heal faster, they're more resistant to poisons and toxins, they can sense tannis (Banshee's crystalized life-force), and can acquire a number of unique powers, such as unleashing a sonic blast, extruding flesh-shredding claws and/or projectile blades of tannis, enhancing their abilities, or transmitting messages on the wind.
