==5e Beguiler?== A version of the Beguiler for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition hasn't been officially released yet... but the DMG netbook "Darkhold: Secrets of the Zhentarim" does contain a version as a Sorcerer (Dungeons & Dragons) subclass, and that book does credit Ed Greenwood as one of the authors, so it's definitely worth noting. Beguilers, in this book, are sorcerers who trace their heritage to beings associated with the trickster archetype. These include fey, fiends and gods of mischief or cunning, but any magical creature that prizes cleverness and deception could spawn beguilers. The Zhentarim eagerly recruit beguilers, whose skills at deception and blurring the lines between warrior and mage are highly useful to them. At 1st level, the beguiler gains the features Armored Mage (free proficiency with light armor, medium armor, shields, all simple weapons, the hand crossbow, rapier, shortbow and shortsword) and Surprise Casting. This feature lets a beguiler spend 1 sorcery point as a bonus action to make a Charisma (Deception) check against a non-incapacitated creature within 30 feet; if this beats the target's Wisdom (Insight) check, the beguiler gains Advantage on the next spell attack roll they make against that creature on this turn. 6th level's Cloaked Casting grants the beguiler a fairly powerful boon: when they cast a spell that has Advantage on its spell attack roll, they can reduce the sorcery point cost for any Metamagic effects applied to that spell by -1 for each Metamagic option. Level 14's Without a Trace combines two benefits; the beguiler no longer needs to spend sorcery points to use the metamagic effect Subtle Spell, and can apply both Subtle Spell and a second metamagic effect to the same spell. Finally, from 18th level, the beguiler can activate a Mantle of Deception for 1 minute by spending 6 sorcery points. Whilst the mantle is active, the beguiler has Advantage on all saving throws against spells targeting them, and creatures suffer Disadvantage on attack rolls against the beguiler. The mantle lasts for 1 minute, or until the beguiler is incapacitated, killed, or voluntarily dismisses it as a bonus action.
