== Notable Regiments and Infantrymen == Famous Regiments of the Auron Infantry * 6th Auron Infantry, "First Blood" Raised alongside the 5th in 888.M30, the 6th was the first Auron Infantry regiment equipped for front-line service. Previously, the Auron Infantries had been seen as only fit for garrison duty, but the expanding front of the Great Crusade forced the Imperium to continuously expand its first-class manpower base. Some of the more conservative potentates of the Imperial Army had been reluctant to promote the Aurries from militia status, but Lord Commander Gufarnus Altmakar over-ruled their objections with the directive, All doubts, theories, prognostications count for nothing. We will know the worth of these men when they shed their first blood. * 17th Auron Infantry, "The Rats of Reichmar" This proud regiment distinguished itself in the Salvation of Reichmar IV. First raised in 905.M30, the 17th initially served as a garrison force before being issued additional equipment and assigned to support the Steel Marshals-led 184th Expedition Fleet in the Ultima Segmentum. Due to their perceived inexperience, the 17th were assigned second-line duties at Helmut Woidich's forward base at Reichmar IV while Woidich led his Space Marines and the more seasoned Imperial Army troops against Ork-held worlds such as Garvenos-4 and Ichimar. Faulty Imperial intelligence saw the Astartes attacking mere tributaries to the great WAAAGH! Dakabag, while the Warlord's main host descended on Reichmar IV. Although other Imperial regiments disintegrated, the Aurries of the 17th endured a forty day siege before Woidich returned to smash the WAAAGH! * 38th Auron Infantry, "Old Leather" Unlike many Imperial Army regiments, the 38th Auron Infantry are a permanent force. Raised in 928.M30, they took part in successful counter-insurgency campaigns in the Segmentum Pacificus for several years before being installed as part of the garrison of Destino, a newly compliant world. The 38th was the only first-line Imperial Army regiment on the newly-pacified world when the Harakien Eldar Empire suddenly attacked in 964.M30. Although they were unable to prevent a rout of the defending forces, the Aurries' courageous guerilla campaign disrupted the invaders until Uli Dreier's Squadron of Winged Victory arrived. The half-starved survivors of the 38th also provided the Imperium with critical tactical intelligence for the Pacification of the Harakien Sector. These heroes of the Great Crusade were personally commended by the Primarch Gaspard Lumey, and their regiment was given a permanent charter. By Lumey's authority, the 38th's commanding officer the right to return to Auron and rebuild the unit, until such a time as the colours of the regiment were disgraced. Exercising this right meant that the 38th were at full strength when the Hektor Heresy began, and they distinguished themselves in several of the minor battles of the war against Chaos. During the Reformation of the Imperium, the 38th's privileges in the Imperial Army were recognised as valid for its new existence as a regiment of the Imperial Guard, showing that the best of the old Imperium would live on in the new. Although the wars of mankind are too extensive for any formation to fight in every great campaign, the brave men of Auron have kept the legend of the 38th alive for thousands of years, hundreds of generations, and countless battles. Famous Infantrymen *Colonel Henry Benton Gordon. Famed as an outstanding knife-fighter and notorious for his belief in "bush medicine", Colonel Gordon was also an inspiring leader and crafty tactician. He was best-known for leading the 17th Auron Infantry during their grueling siege defence on Reichmar IV. Gordon had enlisted young and served a full two decades in the 8th Auron Infantry before returning home, but he had little love for civilian life and leaped at a chance to rejoin the Crusade. With his wealth of experience, Gordon was elected Colonel of the new regiment but he was always just one of men - if not a brother, then certainly an uncle to the younger recruits. During the siege on Reichmar IV, Colonel Gordon was vehement that idleness, not the orks, was the greatest enemy and insisted that his dwindling command undertake aggressive patrols into no-man's land to prevent the greenskins from drawing their net closer. In the last days of the siege, the Colonel personally led a patrol that never returned, and he was posthumously honoured with the Crux Australis, Auron's highest military decoration for bravery.
