===The Hulk=== A throw-back to the earlier monster comics that Marvel had made its name from, the Hulk is brilliant but neurotic and emotionally repressed scientist Bruce Banner, who is exposed to the detonation of his own superweapon, the Gamma Ray Bomb, whilst trying to rescue a teenage Rick Jones who drove onto the military blast testing site. The radiation, rather than killing him, unlocks a split personality; a brutish, adrenaline-driven childlike creature, the embodiment of Banner's pent up rage and hatred. Now, whenever Banner gets angry, he transforms into a super-powered green (originally gray as the printers didn't have enough green ink on hand) giant with the mind of an angry child and magic purple pants that never rip or fall off, known as the Hulk. Hulk just wants to be left alone, but humanity refuses to stop provoking him. Over the years Hulk has mutated to form different personalities; sometimes Banner has full control, sometimes Gray Hulk shows up whenever its the nightfall and calls himself Joe Fixit; sometimes there's nobody in control and Hulk is a mindless animal, sometimes there's the Devil Hulk whose a sadistic sociopath, and even an old horn dog in the far future that killed all of Earth's heroes named the Maestro. Among Hulk's many abilities includes insane strength that increases with rage, muscles strong enough to survive shit like being thrown across the entire planet (see Avengers vs. X-Men for that one), sonic boom clapping, seeing ghosts, regenerating so fast he can survive ripping off his own head followed by fucking exploding, one of the strongest immune systems imaginable (World War Hulk: Gamma Corps revealed this was one of the reasons the military wants his ass alive), and not being allowed to die because he's an unwilling puppet of <s>Satan</s> The One Below All. Thanks to Hulk's enduring popularity and ability to plausibly get in a fight with anyone quite a few of Marvel characters were introduced in his books, including Wolverine, Rocket Racoon, and the Thunderbolts. ====She-Hulk==== When his cousin Jennifer Walters is injured, Bruce is forced to give a her blood transfusion, which inadvertently turns her into a large green giant as well. Unlike Bruce however, Jennifer is largely in control of her abilities and takes great pride in being a huge, sexy musclegirl while also being recognized for her brains as an accomplished attorney. This probably explains why she's remained one of the few "Whatever-Woman" characters to be popular in her own right, rather than slumming around so her publisher can keep the rights to the name. ====Red Hulk==== General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross was always one of the Hulk's greatest threats, constantly leveraging the armed forces in order to capture the Hulk if not outright destroy him. Not helping things was the fact that he never really liked Bruce either, never approving of his daughter Betty's relationship with the pasty scientist and had actually set her up with a Major he was grooming to be a successor. Of course, despite being an aging man, he had a lot of power and influence, including helping fund the creation of Hulkbusters, oversized battlesuits with the strength to take on the green monster. As the years wore on, there had been plenty of cases where the Hulk managed to retain his intelligence and got pardoned for his crimes by an awfully-forgiving government only to revert back as a result from some freak circumstance. While Ross never relented in his grudge/restrained respect, it would eventually come to an end when Hulk got shot into another planet by some of the smartest men in the entire setting - this was the straw that broke the camel's back, as with no Hulk to fight against and the (supposed) death of his daughter, he became an utter wreck. With the help of some of the Hulk's other enemies, they helped stage a plan for Hulk's big revenge trip to Earth that siphoned enough of his power (and his blood) and transfer it into Ross - The General then became a Red Hulk with the ability to emit radioactive flames and full control of his transformations. Unfortunately Marvel then turned the character over to Jeph Loeb, who had gone completely nutso after the death of his son. This led to Red Hulk's ongoing devolving into a mindless power trip on Loeb's part, culminating in an infamous panel where he flies through space on the Silver Surfer's board after dumpstering two of Galactus' heralds and stealing their cosmic energy. <!-- May, 1962 -->
