==Masque of the Jade Dragon/Horror== Whilst the 3e revival of Masque of the Red Death wasn't exactly received warmly, the writers were still game to try it again. As this was before the days when Oriental Adventures became a dirty word, a crazy plan was conceived to create a spin-off to MotRD 3e that would combine its Horror/Historical Fantasy style with Asian cultural horror, instead of the Victorian Empire-centric Gothic Horror of its predecessor. This spin off has been named alternatively as "Masque of the Jade Dragon" and "Masque of the Jade Horror", which may have been due to confusion because this setting's equivalent to the Red Death was supposed to be called "The Jade Horror". Sadly, MotJD/H never made it onto shelves; although the project as a whole was about 85-90% complete, White Wolf lost the license to Ravenloft, and with it all rights to do anything with Ravenloft's subsettings. Add in non-disclosure agreements, and we know very little about what the heck the Jade Dragon/Horror gameline was going to be. What we do know boils down to this: * Lore-wise, Masque of the Jade Dragon was intended to be "stand alone"; you could make it work as the Oriental Adventures analogue for MotRD, but you could also run it as a completely independent setting. * The Jade Dragon/Horror was thus supposed to be as much a mystery as the Red Death; it could have been an ally, a rival, independent of it or just the local name for it in the Asian sphere. * The designers for Masque of the Jade Dragon were veterans of the 3e MotRD project, and had paid attention to the many, many criticisms about its mechanics, especially the awful class and magic systems, so they were intent on fixing everything that they got wrong the first time with their efforts to stay true to the original TSR-crafted ruleset. Thus, MotJH could be seen as a "3.5" version of MotRD, offering alternative systems for classes, magic and feats that you could freely rip-out and backport to fix your games of MotRD. Alas, unlike Van Richten's Guide to the Mists, the compiled work was never released to the internet, and thus we will probably never see what was intended for this intruiging game.
