Sometimes when a creature from the Prime Material dies, instead of going to the outer planes, its soul gets shunted to one of the [[Elemental Planes]] where it is reborn as an '''Animental''', an [[Elemental]] version of its former self. While elemental-like monsters such as fire bats existed long before, proper animentals were first introduced in the ''Monstrous Compendium Planescape Appendix III''. 3e's [[The Manual of the Planes]] gave templates for making elemental versions of creatures, and [[Dragon Magazine]] #347 introduced paraelemental templates.
