As the Athar believe that gods are frauds, pointing out that there are clerics who gain access to magic without worshipping them, they asked where divine magic comes from. The answer they came up with was The Great Unknown, a theoretical god, or gods, or force, or something, from which all divine magic stems from and is incomprehensible to mortal minds. Not much was told about it in 2nd Edition, other than that it's where every Athar cleric gets their powers from. In 3rd Edition it actually got some lore besides being the source of all divine magic. ==The Crystal Cask== The Athar tell of the Crystal Cask of the Great Unknown, an artifact that predates all known deities and contained the essence of divinity within. Somehow, nobody knows how, the cask was broken and all the divinity was released to the multiverse, causing pretender gods to spring up everywhere. Some believe that by finding and gathering the pieces again, the loose divine energy can be gathered back inside, causing the false gods to lose their powers and vanish, and the Great Unknown to reveal itself to everyone. ==Worshippers== The Great Unknown is worshipped almost exclusively by members of the Athar, as it's said that some clerics of the Transcendent Order also gain their powers from it. Though a new rebellious part of the Athar considers the Great Unknown to be no different from the gods they are currently fighting against.
