Legio Canem, the "Void Hounds", were a powerful Titan Legion, based on the Forge World Cairéal. Legio Canem fought in the Emperor's Great Crusade and the Hektor Heresy. They were often known as "the Pit Hounds" or "the Void Hounds". No single Archmagos Intendant rules over Cairéal and its Titan Legion; instead there are 2 Magi who jointly represent the world and legio's affairs. The two leaders have approximately equal power, and usually work together. Their alliance is secured by the ancient "Pact of the Leash and Collar", forged after the devastating wars of the world's past. ==History== The ancient forbears of the Legio set up shop on the world of Cairéal, in a system neighboring Alessia's. Always warlike for an outpost of the Mechanicum, Cairéal fell under the sway of its Titan Legion after a series of wars with hostile Xenos. The Titan lords hold an iron grip over their system and those neighboring it, including the Crannorga system. The Titans were used not only to wage war, but to intimidate their less advanced neighbors. This perhaps explains the powerful legend on Alessia of the "Thunder Kings", which were believed to be agents of the gods. Eventually, inspired by the rebellion of Crannorga under Over-Judge Silas Thurmann, the menials and workers of Cairéal rose up against their Titan masters. After centuries of fighting, the two warring sides signed the "Pact of the Leash and Collar" which balanced power between the Titan Legion and the civilian population of the two factions. Shortly after the Primarch Brennus unified Alessia and defeated the technocrats of the Black Sky Islands, the Magos Malleus began to send out expeditions to the worlds once used for harvesting laborers. Brennus was at first distrustful of another technocrat, but when the Magos gifted him with advanced technology and instructed him in the use of plunder from the Black Sky Islands, they forged a relationship. Towns and cities began to appear again on Alessia shortly before the coming of the Emperor. Brennus's outstanding qualities put him at the head of the new alliance and the pact forged would last into the Great Crusade. Serving as a Primarch's personal titan legion allows the Canem to make repairs to some of their most dilapidated titans. Being reconnected the the wider Mechanicum caused some difficulty for Cairéal. The Xiphoi did not believe in a literal interpretation of the Omnissiah, and looked on The Emperor as a mortal representation of a legend rather than a god. The Tyranus believed at first that The Emperor was a prophet of the Omnissiah, but gradually lost faith in him during the course of the Great Crusade. ==Material Strength== Legio Canem *Warhound Scout Titans. 8 Titans; 4 wolf patterns, 5 mastiffs, 1 jackal *Battle Titans. 2 Vandal class Reavers. 5 Warlords; 3 Death Bringers, 1 Eclipse, 1 Mars-Alpha (Canis Imperator) *Emperor Titans 1 Warmonger. In disrepair at the beginning of the Heresy and could not walk Supporting forces * Numerous skitarii regiments; many of these operate in tandem with the Warhounds. Some Warhounds equipped with pintle mounted weaponry, weapon caches, and hidden entrances to the machine's superstructure. *Tank regiments; The Legio makes heavy use of tanks as supporting vehicles. Numerous unsual and arcane variations can be seen, including a few Baneblade variants. *Battle suits: armored suits smaller than a Knight, around the size of a dreadnought. These are mostly made of parts cannibalized from ancient ruined titans. Can be found with unique weapon and equipment variants. Communly known as "Jotun" by members of the Thunder Kings. The Legio's Titans are relatively standard, save for the fitting of warhounds with smaller scale weaponry. It is on a smaller scale where The Canem truly shine. During the wars that devastated Koriphon's surface and ruined so many titans, the Skitarii and other menials became quite skilled at salvaging parts from the god-machines to craft their own armaments. Enormous vulcan cannons were mounted on servitor-linked tanks, defensive plating and void shields were cobbled into powered suits of armor, and captured titans were jury-rigged with those weapons too large to be borne otherwise. This allows the Canem to deploy heavy weapons in unusual combinations or with speeds not matched by cumbersome Titans. ==Notable Members== Berion Kal. At the time of the Heresy, he held the position Magos Iudicose, or Senior Princeps of the Titan contingent, and in charge of all affairs relating to Titans directly. He was a schemer who would see the Titan operators as supreme once again, ruling like unto gods. Modonus X-3. He was elected Magos Malleus by his fellow "menials" shortly before the end of the Great Crusade. Modonous X was the third of his name to represent the skitarii and common laborers. In battle, he wore the ancient Jotun suit Luna's Roar, which featured a chain axe personally added by the primarch Brennus in addition to other, more exotic weapons. -
