In the BattleTech setting, the Magistracy of Canopus is a major Periphery power ruled by House Centrella, most notable for being primarily Matriarchal, and exceptionally hedonistic. == Founding == The Magistracy was founded by Kossandra Centrella, who was a captain in the Free Worlds League militia. Her unit was left behind deep within Capellan Confederation space thanks to some truly stunning incompetence from her superior officers, and while she was able to narrowly avoid complete destruction or capture for her unit, she never forgave the League for what she saw among them was a boys club stuffed up their own ass, completely unwilling to care for their own. Her sudden return to Free Worlds Space by hijacking a JumpShip made her a hero, and also gave her plenty of power and capital to begin slowly building a coalition of like-minded folks who were getting increasingly annoyed with how patriarchal and pompous the Inner Sphere was becoming, and finally when they could stand no more, she hijacked another group of JumpShips, this time with the express goal of getting the fuck out of dodge, and settled on the planet Canopus in the Periphery. She began luring planets on the fringes of the Free Worlds and Capellan space to eventually begin breaking away from their masters, and by the time the Magistracy was officially formed, they were 36 worlds strong. Of course, that still meant they were very ripe for the conquering in comparison, so when Kossandra's grand-daughter Floral took the throne, she hatched upon what inevitably became the thing the Magistracy became famous/infamous for; extreme social freedom reform, that turned Canopus from "Annoying Upstarts" to "Light-years-wide Pleasure Palace". She also eased up from her grandmother's previous policies regarding men, which has ensured that the Magistracy has remained a popular and prosperous (for the most part) state in the galaxy. == House Centrella == While the Magistracy is nominally an elected monarchic matriarchy, the popularity of House Centrella has all but ensured their near-permanent enthroning as Magistrix. Because the house's founder was a MechWarrior, a celebrity, and historically quite annoyed with the Inner Sphere's bullshit; they have typically been both pop-star pretty and sharp as a tack, something they have been very good at exploiting throughout the generations. Though life has not always been kind them; most of the Magistrixes during the 2700's and well into the 2900's didn't take to life with and without the Star League all that well and hit the bottle hard, and the Succession Wars weren't all that better for them. Only after intermarrying with the Liao family ironically did their fortunes eventually start to reverse. == Society == Thanks to Floral Centrella, the Magistracy of Canopus is a rare gem of the BattleTech universe. A gem set on the diadem of a stripper, sure, but a gem nonetheless. The Magistracy places a special emphasis on personal freedom; so long as all parties are consenting adults, most things, even that thing, are absolutely fair game, and the government willingly pushes these freedoms for every citizen. While yes, that does mean that pornography and heroin may as well be legal tender in Canopian space, it does mean that art, food, and personal expression does extremely well within Magistracy space, and the only regulations listed are mostly common sense to ensure the actors/actresses/models/gimps are cared for well and are not mistreated. The emphasis on personal freedom as well as tolerance for one's neighbor also means that there are a litany of religious and ethnic groups that shack up in Canopian space, and for the most part have enjoyed a true "melting pot" society where everyone is enjoying themselves for the most part. Similarly, or perhaps as a consequence of all of the high-risk fucking, the medical technology and biomedicine fields are well-represented in Magistracy borders, happily some light-years ahead of the Inner Sphere or Periphery, with healthcare being not just a right, but almost a trivial matter. Of course, while the obvious problems of addiction and STDs are a common concern, the plan to turn the Magistracy into something too valuable to conquer sort of backfired in that the very largest industry in Canopian space is the Entertainment sector, which is notoriously susceptible to flux. The Canopian education system was notorious until the 31st century for being extremely spotty and dependent on older Star League materials, which only recently began to see some form of upswing, with the two major universities being little more than trade schools until major reforms were enacted. When the Star League collapsed, the Magistracy had a major economic downfall at the hands of a lack of money and exploitation from Inner Sphere business-types, that only got worse after the Succession Wars when all the rich tourists got put off by the hungry refugees flooding in from the Inner Sphere for awhile. Further, while the rather harsh restrictions on men were lifted fairly early on in the Canopian history books, one of it's main social concerns are that Women are naturally better-suited to command and administrative roles than men, and men typically have to overcome quite a lot of stereotyping in order to really make it within their borders. Though given the many, many, many outlets of which said men have to overcome such stresses, it has rarely ever been that much of an issue. The Trinity Alliance, formed with the Tauran Condordat and the Capellan Confederation, was a major shot in the arm for Canopus, as previously neglected areas of work had been built up, and the influx of cash meant that their famous "Pleasure Circuses" could now go on the road and send money back to Canopus, leading to a major boost in their economy. == Military == Seeing war as bad for business, the Magistracy has kept it's military presence to a very specific minimum; only ever seeing it as a necessary evil and for awhile was the smallest military in the Periphery, which often backfired against it as they only kept a nominal force together that they often overspent too much too late in order to get proper defense together, to the point that only one company, Majesty Metals and Manufacturing, was responsible for creating almost all 'Mechs, fighters, and armor for the entire Magistracy. This changed drastically under the Trinity Alliance after years of struggle, naturally. Now, the Canopian army is the biggest in the Periphery, though it's often called under the terms of the Trinity Alliance to go clean up whatever mess the Capellans or the Taurians have caused. As a military, the Magistracy has traditionally only ever been combined arms, having loose ideas for what regimental structure needed to look like and preferring to keep their 'Mechs in reserve as a killing blow rather than as main battle forces, and due to the lack of resources tended to favor Light 'Mechs over all others. This has changed with the influx of resources from Tauran and Capellan sources, but the heaviest 'Mechs they will tend to take into battle will usually top out at around 80 tons. As a result, most of their 'Mechs are often kitted out with jump-jets, high-speeds, and emphasis on ammo-efficiency. ==== Notable BattleMechs ==== Canopans name their 'Mechs after prominent female figures from classical mythology. It's a decent enough theme to roll with. * Agrotera: After the Jihad, Magistracy engineers took the lessons learned from the Word of Blake's Phoenix Hawk upgrades and just turned it into a hard-upgrade on the Phoenix Hawk with most of the original 'Mechs flaws otherwise dealt with; with an extra-long range PPC, a Variable-Speed Medium Pulse laser, a regular Pulse laser, and some small pulse lasers, in case you thought you were getting up close. * Calliope: Designed as a hard upgrade to the Snake 'Mech that had become decrepit from use as a garrison 'Mech in their space, it is a dedicated anti-infantry and anti-armor platform, though it's pretty slow and unusually ammo-dependent. * Eyleuka: A dedicated stealth-missile 'Mech that has a high top-speed and the capability to launch long and short-range missiles, with the only real downside being that both of the launchers are sat right next to the cockpit, meaning a direct hit will make it exceptionally visible the minute the mushroom cloud breaches low atmosphere. * Penthesilea: The very largest 'Mech the Magistracy will field. While it can't move all that fast on it's own, it can cover almost 90 meters thanks to it's jump jets. It's principal job is to punch a hole into targets with it's AC/10, and then fill said hole with it's many, many lasers and PPCs fire until the target explodes. While it can pack a massive gut-punch, it's only barely got enough heatsinks for all it's weapons, making sustained fire a gamble, if not a one-way trip to an overheated 'Mech. Battletech Factions
