The SU-76 was a Soviet Tank Destroyer during the Second World War, and a playable unit in Flames of War. It was notorious for being an unpopular vehicle with crews and was a popular export post-war to <s>colonies</s> Satellite states.

The Commies first decided that having Tank Destroyers was moderately important around 1941. No doubt looking at the Marder and Archer TDs, they decided to try building their own based off the T-70 Chassis. In addition, they hoped to create a SPG and assault gun based off the same chassis. Production of the main "M" variant started after the initial production version for all intents and purposes sucked ass, requiring a slight reworking of the internal layout.

What resulted sort of worked; the SU-76 proved to be immensely versatile. Armed with a 7.6 cm [[76mm Anti Tank|ZIS-3 gun]], it could reliably kill Panzer IIIs and IVs, but struggled against Tigers and Panthers; the gun could also be used as light artillery, because it was built to have really high gun elevation. It also had an added benefit of being largely immune to Panzerfaust fire simply because it was open topped, and so the pressure detonation caused by a Panzerfaust wouldn't kill the crew so much as blow them back. However, it came at the cost of being vulnerable to grenades and small arms fire, and had no small arms to defend itself in case of an infantry rush.

Soviet Infantry adored the vehicle, as it provided plentiful support fire and was an overall morale boost because you had a little puppy artillery piece following you around. The lighter weight also earned it particular Commendation during the Belarusian campaign, where swampy terrain that bogged down other tanks. The 76 was able to sneak through these swamps and assist infantry in attacking defensive positions.

However Soviet Tank crews intensely disliked them for their cramped space, loud engines, and clumsy handling, earning it the nickname <s>"сука" [[Meme|блять RUSH B]]</s>"Bitch". Given the fact that the Warsaw pact <s>Allies</s> countries were given the things by the dozens after the war is indicative of the value Soviet High command had on the vehicle post war.
