The '''Forester''', or more technically the '''Thyatian Forester''', is an obscure [[Dungeons & Dragons]] class from the days of [[Basic Dungeons & Dragons]]. See, back in the dawn of D&D, the first [[gish]] class was the [[elf]] race-class, which of course eventually had players demanding to know why human warrior-wizards couldn't be a thing. Enter [[Known World Gazetteers|Dawn of the Emperors: Thyatis and Alphatia]], a [[splatbook]] which introduced the idea of the Thyatian Foresters; human warrior-wizards trained by the elves of Thyatis to defend their shared nation.

Mechanically, these were simple: you just took the elf race-class, swapped the lifespan for the human one, and dropped the "Immune to Ghoul Paralysis" and "Infravision" traits, which were the only things that elves had to call their own unique racial abilities in those days.

After this, the forester was abandoned and forgotten by history... until [[Mr. Welch]] came among and reinvented it for [[Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition]] as a [[Ranger]] subclass. For obvious reasons, this is one of the 5e Mystaran subclasses with a racial restriction; you have to be either a Sylvan (Wood) Elf or a Thyatian Human to take this class. Also, there's a mechanical restriction; your Natural Explorer feature must have ''Forest'' as its terrain type, for obvious reasons.

This iteration of the forester starts at level 3 with Expertise (Stealth). At level 7, they gain the Eldritch Magics trait, which adds all [[Illusionist]] spells to the Ranger spell list for them. 11th level gives them Treewalker, which a) grants them a climb speed equal to their base speed, and b) lets them reroll their first missed shot of each round when firing a ranged weapon at a target from a height of 10+ feet above them. Finally, 15th level gives them Seven League Strider, which a) lets them cast Tree Stride at-will with range increased to "any two points in the same forest) and b) lets them burn their reaction to force disadvantage on an attack against them, so long as both they and their opponent are in the same forest.
