New page

stub

Nehwon is the world in which the Sword & Sorcery stories of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are set; it is more often referred to as "Lankhmar", after the name of its greatest capital city.

Whilst largely associated with Fritz Leiber's writings, Nehwon has made other appearances. Over on /co/, DC Comics had the world's iconic heroes cross over with Wonder Woman and Catwoman in 1972's Wonder Woman #202, before doing a five-issue series called Sword of Sorcery that adapted Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser's stories to comic format in 1973 - Epic Comics would do something similar in a four issue mini-series in 1991.

More of relevance to /tg/, however... in 1937, Leiber created a wargame set on Nehwon called "Lahkmar", after the original name for Nehwon's capital. In 1976, TSR would get the license from Leiber to release their own Lankhmar board game. This then set them up to include Nehwon in their Advanced Dungeons & Dragons works: the Nehwon deities popped up in both the 1st and 2nd edition versions of Deities & Demigods, whilst Lankhmar would be fleshed out as an adventuring locale in the 1st edition splatbook "Lankhmar - City of Adventure" (1985) - it would be updated to 2e under the same name in 1993. 1996 would see a revised version for 2e AD&D released under the title "The New Adventures of Fafhrd and Gray Mouser". This also inspired the use of the name "Bazaar of the Bizarre" as an ongoing article series on new magical items in Dragon Magazine.

Mongoose Publishing did a number of RuneQuest-based RPG books set in Nehwon, starting with Lankmar and Lankhmar: Nehwon, during 2006.

Pinnacle Entertainment Group released Savage Worlds books for Nehwon roleplaying in 2015, starting with Lankhmar: City of Thieves.

In 2019, Goodman Games would publish a Lankhmar boxed set supplement for Dungeon Crawl Classics.
