			*Reinforcements: The Imperial Guard functions by establishing a foothold, and then more and more of the Guard shows up in ever increasingly large waves until either the enemy is defeated, the Imperium is distracted by something more important but decides not to blow up the planet, or the Imperium decides to blow up the planet. That didn't happen in this battle. The Guard was left on its own. And not just any world, a ''traitorous'' world. The Imperium tends to have a foaming-at-the-mouth hatred of traitors. This doesn't really happen outside of the Hammer coming down on enemies on a planet in which the PDF and/or local Guard forces are already engaged and all the Imperium needs to do is send a force to smash the enemy and give a push for the Emperor's armies to win the war. So, it happening on Taros is very strange even by the standards of the rather fluid 40K lore.

That is literally their primary source of fuel and frequently harvested by Mechanicus ships just diving right in and gobbling up plasma to transport elsewhere which any Imperial ship can do normally anyway for less convenience. There's no reason for them to not be able to target enemy ships near a star. Hell, the Imperials could have just dived into it and hunted the Tau ships from there with the Tau stark against the void and the Imperial ships impossible to find or shoot.

	*Commissar Negligence: Most of the strategic and tactical errors would never have been allowed simply because Commissars would shoot anyone making said errors. For example, not moving up supply lines. You ''would'' take a bolt to the head for even considering something so utterly moronic. That didn't happen in this battle. The Guard was left on its own. And not just any world, a ''traitorous'' world. The Imperium tends to have a foaming-at-the-mouth hatred of traitors. This doesn't really happen outside of the Hammer coming down on enemies on a planet in which the PDF and/or local Guard forces are already engaged and all the Imperium needs to do is send a force to smash the enemy and give a push for the Emperor's armies to win the war.
