A true iconoclast within the Morndinsamman, Thautam is the closest thing the dwarves have to a dedicated god of magic! Envisioned as an elderly dwarf with rheumy, blind eyes who acts as a kindly uncle to Moradin, Thautam preaches that the spark of magic lies within all things, and that dwarves are strongest when they learn to tap into this magic; it strengthens the walls of their citadels and sharpens the axes in their hands.

The fine magical arms and armor produced by dwarves are invariably dedicated to Thautam, if not produced by his faithful. Indeed, even becoming a cleric of Thautam requires learning how to make magical items, and not just arms and armor. He also charges his clerics with recovering lost dwarven artifacts and protecting their mines of magical metals, such as [[adamantine]] and [[mithral]]. As you might expect, Thautam’s clerics bless weapons and armor prior to a battle, and they also bless mines and other construction projects.

Thautam’s temples are small—for his clergy isn’t as numerous as Moradin’s or Mya’s—but they always show an obviously magical hand in their creation. Some float in the center of a cavern, while others feature spires and buttresses more fanciful and gravity-defying than those favored by dwarf stonemasons.

One unusual aspect of Thautam's faith is that, due to his blindness, prayers to him always use unusually descriptive language. For example, a Thautam prayer for a blessing on a sword might go, “Bless this sword, with its ruby pommel and silver-sharp edge...”

Thautam gained new portfolios implying he is more of a god of mysteries and adventure in 5th edition, but no real details on how that works or why. Indeed, like several other deities who have an association with magic, such as [[Malyk]] and [[Zinzerena]], he doesn't even grant access to the Arcana domain! This is a pity, because his status as the dwarven mage-god is what makes him most interesting, but a reasonable DM should be okay with playing a dwarven Arcana Cleric of Thautam.

Thautam’s herald is an elder earth elemental with 24 Hit Dice. His allies are Medium, Large, and Huge earth elementals.
