==The Genre==
"Victoriana" is genre of fiction relating to the Victorian period, or influenced by the attitudes, politics, science, and other aspects of the Victorian era. The Victorian period is considered by many to be the dawning of our modern era. Cities and industry flourished and the western world considered itself truly civilised. However, it was also a time of exploration and great interest in the rest of the world. The British Empire conquered much of the globe in order to expand their trading interests and civilise the “ignorant savages.”

Aside from being a distinctive branch of the [[Historical Fantasy]] flavor of [[Setting Aesthetics]], Victoriana has also given rise to two three subgenres; [[Gothic Horror]] (Horror through a Victoriana lens, namely Victoriana morality), [[Steampunk]] (Victoriana Science Fiction) and [[Gaslamp Fantasy]] (Victoriana meets Fantasy, usually in an [[Urban Fantasy]] sense. This has also produced the sub-subgenre of [[Screampunk]] (Steampunk Horror).
