In anthropological terms, a Clan is a group of people which are united in having a common ancestor (be they real or perceived). In particular it refers to the Clans of medieval Scotland.
In general the term is compact, reasonably well understood and archaic. As such a lot of fantasy writers use it to describe sub-factions
