| Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is the protagonist of The Dresden Files urban fantasy series by Jim Butcher. A very tall and profoundly (un)lucky man, Harry Dresden is almost the perfect archetypal noire detective, but with a heavy dose of modern snark and humor.

| Born to an actual witch and a stage magician and orphaned at a young age, Harry Dresden was adopted by a friend of his mother and trained in the ways of magic. Sounding pretty generic, right? WRONG! His adoptive father, Justin DuMorne was actually a Warlock (black magic user) and was training Harry to be a loyal enforcer. When his adoptive father tried to put him in a psychic headlock of forced loyalty, Dresden ended up burning him to death in an impromptu wizard's duel. Naturally, the Wardens(Inspector Javert-type magic cops) showed up and arrest Harry for killing with magic, a violation of the Laws of Magic that Harry was never told about. He barely avoided getting beheaded, due to the fact that he was acting in self defense against Black Magic, and because respected Council Wizard, Ebenezar McCoy spoke up on his behalf and agreed to foster him. He was then placed under parole, with the penalty for violation being death, for the majority of his young adulthood. He was accepted into the White Council, an organization of the most powerful human magic users on the planet, because the Council likes to keep their potential enemies close.

| Harry eventually moved to Chicago and worked under private investigator Nick Christian, before getting his own private investigator license and operating under the name ''Harry Dresden, Wizard'' completely un-ironically. The local X-Files detachment of the Chicago Police Department then hired him to help them deal with all the crazy shit that happens in Chicago when no one's looking. During this time, he would develop a cop-buddy relationship with Lieutenant Karrin Murphy, below-average height gun nut, black belt, and certified badass.

| While working on the job, he met tabloid reporter Susan Rodriguez and began a flirtatious and eventually romantic relationship with her. He planned to propose to her, but then she was turned into a half-vampire by local vampire she-pimp and spiteful bitch Bianca St. Claire. In response, Harry burned her entire operation to the ground with his mind and set the murderously vengeful shades of her past victims on her blood-sucking ass. Susan then broke up with him out of fear of accidentally killing him in a fit of literal bloodlust. His actions also started a war between the White Council and the Red Court of Vampires.

| Harry then fell into a deep depression, spending months unsuccessfully trying to find a cure for Susan's half-vampirism, losing all sense of happiness and personal hygiene. After being cajoled by a friend into getting back to work, he took a job from the extremely attractive and extremely intimidating Mab, Queen of Air and Darkness, ruthless faerie demigoddess of Winter. During the investigation, he uncovered and barely stopped a web of intrigue and conspiracy that threatened to send the world into a downward spiral of ecological disasters. Mab, impressed by his work, offered him the position of Winter Knight, her personal assassin/plaything, an offer that Harry immediately turned down. This near death experience managed to shock Harry out of his depression, but never again would he be as happy as he was when Susan was still human.
