Ludwig Schwarzhelm is the Emperor's champion, the personal bodyguard of Emperor Karl Franz, and Emperor's justice. This is the guy Karl sends in whenever a noble family or elector count starts getting defiant. Think of him as a six foot eight, two hundred odd pound warning shot. If he shows up at your door, be afraid. Because the eyes of Karl Franz are upon you and his armies not far behind.
Ludwig is an imposing man. Tall as fuck and stronger than that. Once during a trip to Averland to sort out the elector count after the passing of Marius Leitdorf Ludwig damaged Kurt Helborg's Runefang Grudge Settler with his own blade The Sword of Justice. All that happened with Ludwig coming off barely sleeping or eating for multiple weeks while being assailed in his dreams by the power of a Chaos witch. The same Witch who drove Marius Leitdorf completely insane. He then recovered from his brush with the great enemy, the assumed death of his frenemy Kurt, and his wounds while trekking across the woods and eating nothing but whatever woodland creatures he could scavenge, fighting tooth and bloody nail against the forces arrayed against him to restore Averland to imperial rule because Ludwig is just that hardcore.
He openly detests many of the noble trappings of the Empire, shunning the pomp and finery of nobility while striving to uphold the more utilitarian and warlike ideals he believes make the Empire strong. Working alongside Karl Franz for most of the Emperor's adult life has given Ludwig a view into events few others have. It has also given him the perception behind the Emperor's mask coming to see the Emperor for the true son of Sigmar that he is.
Ironically despite serving as a bit of a mentor in Franz's early years, its probably Karl who inspires Ludwig most of all.
