The Sable Wraiths are a Adeptus Astartes Chapter formed during the Ultima Founding, and are known successors of the Raven Guard Chapter. Due to their unique gene-seed, they have trouble fielding more than 200 Astartes at any time, and as such are pushed towards asymmetric and ambush warfare, which might be encouraged by their parent Chapter's disposition as well.

Mutations[edit | edit source]

Formed during the 42nd Founding, also known as the Ultima Founding, the Sable Wraiths were discovered early on to suffer numerous mutations, some from their parent Chapter, the Raven Guard, as well as new ones. Like their ancestors, they hold the same pale complexion, as well as non-functioning Mucranoids and Betcher's Glands. Additionally, the gene-seed of the Sable Wraiths gives every surviving Astartes some psychic potential, which grows under specific circumstances as the Astartes furthers their training. This mutation seems to be a hyper-present form of the Ash Blindness, also known as the Sable Brand, of the Raven Guard. When mixed with their psychic potential, this first manifests in Initiates as voices of visions during times of stress. Starting as whispers or ghostly figures, this grows into full conversations and apparitions with these manifestations in the upper chains of command. A direct correlation seems to exist between the strength and regularity of these visions, and the psychic potential of the Astartes. This has been dubbed the "" in the ranks of the Sable Wraiths.

With the advent of these mutations also came the more adverse side affect: those who were unable to form a grasp on their new psychic potential are driven mad, their personality broken as the manifestations take hold of them. These failed Initiates are used as serfs for the Chapter or given roles of respect back on their homeworld, and are treated well. The success rate of this procedure is low, and as such the Chapter is always under strength, usually consisting of less than 200 Astartes at and given time.

Organization[edit | edit source]

With the prevalence of Psykers in the Chapter, all levels of leadership have some correlation with the traditional role of Librarians, with the role of Chief Librarian and Chapter Master in a Codex-compliant Chapter rolled into one for the Sable Wraiths. Apothecaries also hold esteemed positions in the Sable Wraiths, as they ensure that the fallen Astartes can be reborn in the Initiates of the Chapter.

Warfare and Tactics[edit | edit source]
