The Spirit Hunters are a loyalist Space marine chapter of unknown founding derived from Dark Angels geneseed and that of their primarch Lion El'Jonson. They are not a Codex Astartes-compliant Chapter and maintain a different Chapter structure and Chapter culture than is the norm amongst most Astartes Chapters. This Chapter is currently under-strength after an attack by both Eldar and Chaos Space marines at the same time.
Warcry: "Destroy the allies of Angron"

Founding
The Spirit Hunters chapter was created by a strategic pronostication. Some one in the Administratum, most probably from the Logis Strategos foresaw a treat so high that the creation of a chapter was needed. It is implied that the inquisition also had a hand in their founding as they have a bond with the inquisition similar to that of the Grey Knights, and the Spirit hunters deploy aircraft and personal weaponry usually only used the inquisition. Founded during 38th millennium chapter still wonders if the treat they were created to face has come, or if it has already past. The chapter looks forward, rather that getting tangled in this mystery, and continues to do the Emperors work with faith and honor.

Chapter Master Cadmus is a member of the dark angels inner circle, keeping the dark angels agenda, in parallel to the main purpose of the Chapter. Like the Dark Angels, the Spirit Hunters are of monastic in nature, but they are different, a new generation unlike the Dark Angels they have looked at the future and changed their traditions. The Spirit Hunters do not seek out the fallen, to the extent that their parent chapter do. The secret is kept within the uppermost members of the Chapter's command structure. Only the first, second and third companies are have any idea about the fallen, and even they are kept on a need to know basis.

Chapter Beliefs and Practices
Spirit Hunters live by the mantra "See but don't be seen". They are adepts at maintaining a silent vigil on their foes. They strike from the dark and by surprise. Not a sound nor a movement are made until the perfect time time has come, and the enemy's ended. So the chapter values cunning and strength (+5 str, +5 per) even if they have changed their ways from their progenitors in favor of stealth and cunning, they still keep high value on their martial prowess and heritage.

The chapter completely twist the codex astartes and because of that they have an unique organization. The first second and tenth companies are allowed to be filled beyond a hundred space marines and in times of a large influx of new space marines extra companies are added beyond the ten that the codex requires. The second company is named the Iron Wing company and is made up completely of Land Speeder variants. The third company is made up of Space marines with trained in special operations. Armed mostly with stalker bolters, Mk6 Corvus armor, and camo-cloaks. All members of the first company have to have spent at least a hundred years serving in the third company.

Furthermore, the chapter does not keep Techmarines, instead individual marines must learn to take care of their own equipment. Tank and flier crew are taught the complete workings of their vehicles by the chapters tecpriests, who are run by the most senior tank Commander of the First company. Chapter Chaplins have an exhaustive knowledge of technology to rival that of any tecmarine of any other chapter and they regularly inspect the equipment of their marines. From bolter to landraider, and from initiate to chapter master a chaplain can ask to inspect the equipment of any marine at any time. The practice of maintaining one's own weapons comes from the Chapter's home world Xion where the feral tribes honor and respect they weapons before anything else. A marine of the Spirit Hunters is not happy to allow his weapons out of his sight for even a moment.

Unlike most other chapters the Spirit Hunters believe in the Emperor as a god, and honor their primarch as the son of a god. The have belief in the words "The Emperor Protects"

Recruitment
Xion is a feral jungle world that is home to many tribes. Each has it's own traditions and customs, but they all have the same legendary custom of the warrior trials. A young warrior must prove himself in a series of tests. He is pushed to his very limits of strength, endurance and martial prowess. If he passes the test he must walks deep into the dark caves of Xion without food. In the darkness and complete sensory deprivation of the caves many loose their minds or starve to death, but some develop a sixth sense and are guided to the 'beacon' librarians.

As recruits worship their weapons they are allowed keep them during their time as a scout. Those who favored larger weapons during there time as a tribesman, often sharpen their weapons to a molecular edge. Others will quickly grow to a point of the weapons becoming too small and fragile for them to use, and will wear them as an ornament or leave them at their bunk in the chapter fortress. Whatever they do, it is traditional for all such weapons to be broken and burned upon the warriors initiation to full Space marine status.

During initiation a warrior is subject to many sessions of Hypno-conditioning and sensory deprivation. It is unsure if this leads to the flaws in the Spirit Hunters geneseed, or if it's due to a pre-existing problem.

Geneseed
Wither through training or modified geneseed all members of the Spirit hunters can sense psykers and resist psychic attack. However, they also all have a condition refereed to as "Over sensitive Occulobe", which means bright environments hurt their eyes.

Connections to the Inquisition
The Connection between the Spirit Hunters and the Ordo Malius is as obvious as it is mysterious. Armed with advanced weapons and airborne units, and given their unique use of techpriests as chapter serfs, leads to a lot of questions behind closed doors. The fact is only the most senior members of the Chapter has any understanding what the inquisition has in mind for them.
Although the common space marine of the Chapter understand nothing of their connection, all know the Daemon that the chapter names their enemy the daemon prince Angron
