Thessalmonsters are some of the worst visually designed monsters in D&D. The basic body plan is a headless quadruped with a prehensile pincer tail, and a gaping hole-mouth at the front. The various subraces are created by putting a ring of heads on the "lips" of this hole.
According to the lore, the original--now extinct--thessalmonster was biologically unstable and able to reproduce with any other creature, creating countless hybrids. The most common of these is the thessalhydra, which has eight serpent heads around the central mouth. The thessalmera replaces two of these heads with a lion and red dragon head. The thessalgorgon adds a ninth gorgon head while the thessaltrice replaces the hydra heads with eight cockatrice heads.
