Xorn

Xorns are gemstone-pacman from Dungeons & Dragons. They're one of the many, MANY monsters that E. Gary Gygax cooked up to relieve overly-wealthy parties of their loot.

Xorns are stumpy, barrel-shaped creatures with a large mouth atop their head and trilateral radial symmetry - that means they have three arms, three legs, and three eyes, spaced equally around their bodies. Denizens of the Plane of Earth (or the Elemental Chaos), they feed on earth and metal, with a particular craving for precious metal, gemstones, and magical items made from the aforementioned. With their ability to phase through the earth as if it were air, they find harvesting these materials no problem ... on their planar home(s). When they show up on the Prime Material, however, things can get messy; xorns aren't evil, but when hungry, they are willing to try and take shinies from fleshies by force.

Another creature related to the xorn is the xaren, which resemble smaller xorn with shinier, metallic hides. While xorn feed on minerals and stone, xaren prefer enchanted metal, such as magic weapons and armor.

Xorns go way back in D&D history; the first xorn appeared in the original 1977 Monster Manual for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (the xaren showed up in the MM2), receiving a 2e update in the Monstrous Compendium Volume 2 and then appearing alongside the xaren in the Monstrous Manual. The xorn went on to appear in the Monster Manuals for 3e and 5e, and the Monster Manual 2 for 4e.
