As hard as this may be to believe, bullywugs are actually one of the oldest monster races in D&D, stretching all the way back to AD&D 1st edition, created by Gary Gygax for the Fiend Folio. They even were picked as the mook of choice for the D&D cartoon series (where they look more like lizardmen than frogmen). Yes, that existed. That said, they've never really been anything more than a froggish take on goblins, being stupid, violent, savage swamp-dwellers with a penchant for human flesh and clumsily worshipping various abominations.

In 5th Edition, Bullywugs have become a race of Bullying frogs with an Inferiority superiority complex, trying to impress outsiders. They can talk to and are often in company with giant frogs, toads, and other amphibians (although this takes a special Bullywug translator) which they use as pact animals, usually having them sallow and regurgitate game, and for some reason Bullywugs like the taste.

Bullywugs, seen here, often participate in activities of intellectual and spiritual development, honing their minds and bodies, preparing for the day when someone will actually give a shit about them and take them seriously.

Bullywugs are ugly little frog-men who live in swamps and have no redeeming qualities at all, whatsoever. They're fat, they smell bad, they have no drive nor ambition, no greater dreams or an empire to speak of, and oh yeah, THEY ARE COMING!!! MILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF BULLYWUGS ARE COMING!!! WHY WON'T ANYBODY LISTEN TO ME?!?!?

As hard as this may be to believe, bullywugs are actually one of the oldest monster races in D&D, stretching all the way back to AD&D 1st edition, created by Gary Gygax for the Fiend Folio. They even were picked as the mook of choice for the D&D cartoon series. Yes, that existed. That said, they've never really been anything more than a froggish take on goblins, being stupid, violent, savage swamp-dwellers with a penchant for human flesh and clumsily worshipping various abominations.

They worship Ggorulluzg. If you were paying attention to White Dwarf's Fiend Factory at the time which Gygax comically wasn't.

Pathfinder renamed them Boggards and gave them some more development. Diamond Throne / Arcana Evolved named them Inchon and really didn't.

4th Edition[edit | edit source]

They made their 4e debut in the Monster Manual 2 for 4e, complete with racial profile in the back appendage, and a history portraying them as, literally, left over mistakes by the Primordials in creating life. Nobody would ever play these things, unless they wanted to be an ironic idiot and/or the group punching bag, unless you are a munchkin (in which case you can probably make a damn decent bleak disciple assassin and slit their throats in their sleep), or unless you grab a third-party version. They never had any feat support.

 • Average Height: 5'4" to 6'0"
 • Average Weight: 150 to 240 lb.
 • Ability Bonuses: +2 to CON and DEX
 • Size: Medium
 • Vision: Normal
 • Languages: Common, Primordial
 • Skill Bonuses: +2 Athletics
 • Rancid Air: (Poison) Aura 2: Any enemy that spends a healing surge in the aura is weakened until the end of its next turn.

5th Edition[edit | edit source]

In 5th Edition, Bullywugs have become a race of Bullying frogs with an inferiority complex, trying to impress outsiders. They can talk to and are often in company with giant frogs, toads, and other amphibians (although this takes a special Bullywug translator) which they use as pack animals, usually having them swallow and regurgitate game, because they prefer their food pre-digested. Two special classes of bullywug, the Bullywug Croaker and Bullywug Royal, appeared in Ghosts of Saltmarsh.

Standard Bullywugs can jump up to 10 ft high and 20 ft long, they can Breath underwater(Somehow), their skin offer natural camouflage in swampy terrain, and they can talk to Toads and Frogs.

Bullywug Croakers have the Natural Ability to use Bard magic though Croaks, hence the name. Their 2 Bardic abilities are Glaar-pat and Rooooo-glog (sic). Glaar-Pat is a 3 a day ability that deals psychic damage. Rooooo-Glog is a one a gives 10 Temp Hp to any Bullywug within 30 ft.
