The decapus is a D&D squid monster - ten 'cles, where the octopus got eight. It swings and grabs prey from tall trees.
Jean Wells introduced the decapus in Palace of the Silver Princess for Moldvay's Basic line 1981, one of the few that survived the rewrite. X6: Quagmire! put one back in the water.
Thence it bypassed other D&D work, going straight to the Mentzer BXCMI Creature Collection. It was updated to 4e in Dragon Magazine #418, and was reintroduced in 5th in the The Tortle Package on Snout of Omgar in Chult Island, a supplement to the Tomb of Annihilation adventure.
