Sometimes when a creature from the Prime Material dies, instead of going to the outer planes, its soul gets shunted to one of the Elemental Planes where it is reborn as an Animental, an Elemental version of its former self. While elemental-like monsters such as fire bats existed long before, proper animentals were first introduced in the Monstrous Compendium Planescape Appendix III. 3e's The Manual of the Planes gave templates for making elemental versions of creatures, and Dragon Magazine #347 introduced paraelemental templates.
