The 'Golden Rule' of Roleplaying

The concept has been around a really long time, but many people don't know or don't care for whatever reason. The golden rule is something along the lines of: 'People play an RPG to have fun. Having fun takes precedence over the rules. If something would be more fun a different way, talk to your GM about changing it.' Many games have this rule stated, though it is generally regarded as a hobby-wide rule. The vast majority of the time the rule is explained in the games introduction section, which people rarely read.

Following is a list of where in various rule sets this idea is contained:

  • Pathfinder: Page 9 "The Most Important Rule"
  • Double Cross: Page 12 "The Golden Rule"

GM Arbiter Variant

In some games the "rule" is not stated to the players, but the gamemaster is encouraged to "fudge", cheat, or bend the rules to make sure the players have the best experience and/or run the game they want to run.
