Mistborn is the name of a fantasy series created by Brandon Sanderson which features unique magical systems. It contains a large amount of Awesome and, for the first three books,Grimdark in fuckhuge amounts, although not quite Warhammer 40K level.
Plot
Evil almost, but not quite, ruled the land. A brave hero of a mysterious heritage rose to challenge it.

The 'hero' was tempted by the prospect of unlimited power and fell to evil. Using said unlimited power, he severly fucked up the world by placing it too close to the Sun, which caused said sun to appear red and everything started to burn.
