Piracy is the act of launching attacks on ships with the intent of robbery. One who engages in such activity is known as a pirate. Piracy has happened for thousands of years in most places where maritime commerce has been profitable and has been a big issue in Southeast Asia, the Sea of Japan, the Mediterranean and the Baltic, but when people in the west think of piracy, they think of pirate activity in the Caribbean between the 16th through 18th century. Sadly (in the minds of all non-sailors), that kind of piracy has died down quite a bit. Now piracy mainly happens near the coast of Somalia and instead of wooden ships they use speedboats and other small watercraft.
