Ashiok is at the forefront of Wizards of the Coast's efforts at Representation, which entails bumping the percentage of female characters on cards up from ~18% in the Khans of Tarkir era to ~50% as of Ixalan, making sure they are fully clothed and in active roles rather than passive roles, adding more black heroes, and, for LGBT people, you get three bones thrown to you: [https://scryfall.com/card/c16/36 Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis], as the friendly, helpful interracial gay couple who live next door, [https://scryfall.com/card/frf/90 Alesha, Who Smiles at Death], as the gender binary-aligned transwoman who has an unrealistically easy time getting accepted by her entire tribe (which is totally representative of most transpeoples' real struggles), and, doubling or tripling up as representation for nonbinary transpeople, anyone else androgynous, and the gender-free, you get Ashiok.
Mark Rosewater likes to write long, enthusiastic blog posts on Tumblr about how important representation is, and how WotC gets this.
So if you fall somewhere into the "Ashiok" bin of this neat divide into three types of LGBT people, keep in mind that WotC is telling you that this sort of representation in a mass media franchise, as inhuman, incomprehensible, fear-inducing, alien, monstrous, is ''not'' supposed to be just entertainment, is not supposed to be transphobia; rather, it is intended to do you good.
Whereas cis women now get dozens of new cards with every expansion, so people will understand that they come in many different flavors.
But that's okay, because being monstrous is more fun anyway, so back to embracing stereotype threat and making human skin suits.
