Baldur's Gate is one of the biggest metropolises in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons. An independent city-state, it sits on the border between the Sword Coast and the Western Heartlands, on the north bank of the River Chionthar about 20 miles (32 km) east from its mouth on the Sea of Swords. It was located to the south of the great city-state of Waterdeep and to the north of the cod was located along the well-traveled Coast Way road. It is often considered at least a potential rival to Waterdeep, and many argue that its population is actually larger.
The city is incredibly well-known, in no small part thanks to the videogames that share its name, and it even has two setting splatbooks dedicated to the city and its inhabitants, written in-universe by Volo.
When comparing Waterdeep or even Neverwinter to Baldur's Gate, it has a lot more crime, and infrastructure corruption. Being a fantasy game, no city is immune to being a constant target of dark forces, but something about this city has attracted the god Bhaal and his Dead Three friends many times, likely because of all the knife crime.
