Hailing from the unexplored depths of the Calico Stars (the Caribbean in space) The Black Locks are another product of /tg/'s overactive imagination during the summerfagging of 2012 (which has also birthed wonders such as the Scraplootas and Blood Jaguars). The concept:

Rogue Trader Marines. Or in laymen's terms, Pirate Marines.

Started off from the no doubt neckbearded mind of the OP going by the name "Friendly Anon", the chapter quickly snowballed into a jizzfest of pirate and whaling pop culture fantastic crew of swashbuckling PIRATES IN SPEHS. AND they have a sea shanty battle cry. AND all their weapons look like flintlocks or ships cannons. AND they specialize in boarding action and swordfighting. FUCK.

Origins

"Are you ready kids?!" "Aye aye Captain!"

Yarr, sit down lad, and take another tankard o grog while i tell ye the tale o the ol' Black Locks.

Far off in the edges of the Segmentum Pacificus, in the unexplored regions of the Calico stars, there was a chapter of the Emperor's Space Marines. The Black Locks, they were called, a stern lot indeed. Now, they were war torn and beleaguered from the many rebellions in the segmentum, thousands of colonies and provinces needed to be brought into line and the chapter was so worn down barely a single company remained at full strength. And that was when fortune flashed its gold teeth at them.

A Rogue Trader, hunted by hordes of Eldar Privateers crash landed on the Locks' homeworld. After fighting off the xenos crewmen the marines dragged the dying sailor, Roger his name was, from his vessel and gleaned from him something which would forever change their fate.

In his possession he had a great gift for them, to them alone he passed on his ancient star map of the Calico stars, written aeons ago. On its blackened surface there was a marked the location of a treasure most precious; the Ultimate Treasure, a piece of archeotech fabled to be able to heal even the most fatal of wounds. Knowing that the Imperium itself would crumble should any foul forces get their hands on this prize, every single marine of the Locks set off immediately to find it, leaving behind their battered fortress. From that day forth they have earned themselves the name of "The Dread Fleet", and to this day the sail the Calico stars in search of the treasure, ever searching for its miraculous power.

The Fleet

Though every vessel of the chapter follows the ultimate goal of A MYSTICAL QUEST, TO THE ISLE OF TORTUGA, RAVEN LOCKS SWAY ON THE OCEAN BREEZE ultimate treasure, many ship's captains tend to have their own personal goal. Take for example Chapter Master Ahab, who has a personal vendetta against the beast which took his leg. Also each vessel has its heraldry and flags, which each marine belonging to that ship will display on their armour. Although the Dread Fleet sails as one many times a year, most of the time they will be each sailing separately to search for clues to help decode Jolly Roger's ancient map.

As the chapter set off pretty fucking hastily, they left all their supplies behind on their ruined fortress monastery, THE FUCKING DUMB KLUTZES. As such this gives a perfect excuse for them to be dickwad pirate raiders and steal shit they are dashing rogues who trade with and steal from the heretic and xeno in order to further their quest to the galactic leyline Ultimate Treasure.

The Calico Stars are rife with independent colonies and goods are traded off to whoever can offer the finest price. It is amongst these shores the Black Locks sail, doing battle with white whales, ghost ships and other, more savage pirates. Not to mention traders from the orient and voodoo cults. The Locks are not always alone, however, sometimes the (not so) reliable customs fleet shows up every now and again to help out get blown into flotsam and drink tea.

It is also not uncommon for the Black Locks to take prisoners. Namely tavern wenches to work in their Holy Taverns aboard their ships. Needless to say, the Inquisition are not terribly happy about this.

Captains of Note

  • Chapter Master Ahab, Captain of the Pequod The big Blackbeard himself, wielder of the Black Cutlass, he is regarded by every Lock as a "King of Pirates" of sorts. Whilst he masterminds the Dread Fleets quest to find the Ultimate Treasure, his heart his heavy with the thirst for vengeance. His first mates have began to notice his growing obsession with hunting down the beast that took his leg, the living flagship of Hive Fleet Tanihwa, the Mobian Terror.
  • Captain Sparrow, Captain of the Obsidian Pearl and the Rum Grails Famously cocksure, Sparrow was once a young Rogue Trader himself before he apotheosis to become Astartes. His ongoing rivalry with the Chaos Corsair Barbarossa, who was once one of Sparrow's crew, is the stuff of legend. He has been under Inquisitorial investigation so often that they have assigned Agent Norrington to his ship permanently. He is not, as many suspected, under chaotic influence. He is however mad as a tricorn hatter. His infamy is only bolstered by the fact he was once part of the Cursed Captain Jones' crew.
  • Apothecary-Captain Peter "The Blooded", Captain of the Red Fall and the Crimson Blades The leader of the bloodthirsty Crimson Blades, his crew have a disproportionate number of Apothecaries, including the good captain himself. This is to be able to patch up the vast number of casualties produced by the Crimson Blades constant swashbuckling adventure. Rather than their own personal quest to follow alongside the search for the Ultimate Treasure, the Blades simply yearn to do battle with any xeno or heretic scurvy dog that sails the Calico Stars.
  • Cursed Captain Jones, Captain of the Flying Dutchman and the Hearts of Corruption A hero of tragedy, the rogue Captain fell from grace. When making planetfall on an oppressive penal world ruled over by the hard hand of the Inquisition, he fell in love with a sanctioned psyker by the name of Calypso. Freeing her from the clutches of the Psykana they fled from the Fleet together aboard his ship with but a handful of his crew still loyal to him. However, without the restraint of the Scholastia to keep her psychic potency in check, Calypso soon fell prey to the ruinous powers of the Warp. Possessed by a daemonette, she turned on Jones and fled to the furthest reaches of the Calico Stars. Now he forever searches for her, bent on getting back the woman he loved, damned in the eyes of the Imperium and his former brothers.

The Farseer was impressed. The Ork pirates had put up somewhat of a fight defending their spoils, but had fallen eventually. Her Aspect warriors were mopping up the last stragglers and prepareing to sift through the Ork loot for valuables.

Perhaps this little venture would pay off in the end.

A message crackled through her comms. "Farseer, there's an incoming object on our long range sensors."

Now that was strange. They were in deep space, and she had only found this hulk out of pure luck. Who else would be in the area-

"Oh shit..."

"Farseer, the object is moving faster!"

Her face turned white. "Oh shit..."

"Incoming enemies!"

The hull of the hulk buckled under the weight of dozens of boarding vessles crashing through, and from them spewd forth a dozen black-clad giants!

"Yarr!"

"To the Galaxy's End!"

"And to treasure untold!"

"Beyond the farthest stars we go!"

"There is no fear we shall know!"

"FOR THE EMPEROR! YO HO HO!"
