Samantha Specter is smarter than you. It's okay, you can admit it, it's no big deal. There are maybe ten people on the planet that can outwit her. Child prodigy that graduated college when she was in her teens and just never burnt out. For a little under ten years she's been a very well-paid business consultant, which is great, but...Okay she sucks at doing anything that doesn't involve being the smartest one in the room. There, I said it. She has no friends, no hobbies, nothing to give her life proper meaning. And I mean, her work is great, but nobody cares. You know how many people remember who stopped the second-biggest tech firm from going under last year? No, I didn't think so. But I bet you can name the last ten members of the Avengers off the top of your head.
Samantha Specter is an intern at Futurepharm's IT department. Quiet, shy, but pleasant enough. The thing about her is she -loves- superheroes. Avengers, solo heroes, hell, even the X-Men she's cool with, because everything about them is so awesome! She's clever; not brilliant, but does her job well, which mostly involves fixing computers. The important thing about her is that she's the personal IT rep for Project Extremis, a highly-classified military program to create supersoldiers. The first prototype, Extremis: Dragon, is stolen by a far-right terrorist group.

So what does a rich genius with too much free time desperate for a reason to exist do, you ask? Why, buy some superpowers! Sam hired a biotech firm, Futurepharm, to invent something to give her superpowers, and they created Extremis; a nanomachine solution that would rewrite her body with OMG SUPERPOWERS. Great, right? Unfortunately, the head engineers of the project have the same problem with their lives as Samantha and decided they were too awesome to spend their lives making super-goo for loser nerds. And again, the obvious solution was taken: Give Extremis away to an idiot terrorist with no ambition that would go on a rampage and show off Futurepharm's new toy under the pretenses of it being stolen, so someone will contract them to make more.
Sam sees her chance, and stupidly takes it. In the confusion after the break-in, she manages to get to the vault and set herself up with the second prototype, just called Extremis. By the time anyone catches her, she's already comatose in a cocoon of scabs as her body rewrites itself with superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, senses, and the power of flight. She makes it through, and takes to the enhancements remarkably well. A superhero fight between the newly-reborn Snapdragon and Mallen, the user of Extremis: Dragon, ensues, and she wins easily.

Oh, don't worry, Ms. Specter got her powers just like she wanted. She even has a costume! Except now there are crazy people that exist because she wanted superpowers. Which, y'know, makes her feel great. Almost like a real hero.
S.H.I.E.L.D. shows up, and about ten minutes of detective work finds that Sam's superiors sold the dose and faked a robbery, then allowed Sam to steal her dose as part of a big show to prove Extremis works and can be used for any superpower you want. Agent Coulson isn't having any of it, and takes everyone in. He quickly bonds with Sam over their shared love of superheroes though, and absolves her of any wrongdoing, on the condition that Snapdragon join the New Avengers Initiative.
