Cortexes are magical devices used in Warmachine. For a Warjack to function it requires a cortex which acts as its brain allowing it to think, receive and carry out orders. The secrets of Cortex manufacturing are closely guarded secrets among wizarding circles. Each faction in Warmachine has its own methods of creating cortexes. Cygnar being the most prosperous kingdom has more cortexes than anyone else, allowing them to build more Warjacks. Khador has the fewest cortexes and as such they recycle all of their warjacks, rebuilding and repairing any that get destroyed. Cortexes can degrade overtime causing their Warjacks to become unstable, acting erratically, as shown by Khador's Beserker 'jacks which are the oldest warjacks still in service.

More advanced cortexes, rather than degrading, cause the 'jacks in question to develop personalities and heightened intellect and skill born of experience and memory. Most "character" 'jacks that aren't just special prototypes are these long-running 'jacks.
