Unit Overview and Tactics for Tohaa
Why play Tohaa?
The Tohaa are the masters of bio engineering. Much of their arsenal come out of their mastery including their armor, ammunition, and even alien auxiliaries. They have recently allied themselves with the Human Sphere against a common foe. However, the Tohaa have ulterior motives.
Play Tohaa, if you love fireteams. Fireteam: Triads allows the Tohaa to mix and match different troopers in a single small 3-man team. Tohaa also has access to more multi-wound troopers than any other army thanks to those Symbiont Armor. The Tohaa are very mobile and they have a very wide selection of troopers and alien auxiliary to field.
Faction Features
Special Skills
Symbiont Armor: Symbiont Armor is a living piece of armor that gives the bearer an extra profile "layer" and wound. Wounds have to go through the Symbiont Active profile before getting to the Inactive profile. This counts as having multiple wounds, therefore, Shock and Viral will not insta-kill them. In addition, Unconscious troopers possessing Symbiont Armor receive a +3 to Physique tests when testing for Regeneration, Medikit, or Automedkit checks. Symbiont Armor is highly sensitive against Fire ammunition. Failing a single ARM roll will completely kill the Active Profile. Active Profiles cannot be repaired.
- Be sure to pay attention to the differences in both Active and Inactive profiles.
Fireteam: Triad: Tohaa can form small 3-man fireteams, and there is no limit on how many Triads you can take. Additionally, Triads can consist any unit just as long as they have the Fireteam: Triads rule. This allows the Tohaa to mix units in a team.
Weapons and Equipment
Viral Ammunition: Being master bio engineers, the Tohaa have a lot of Viral weapons including Sniper Rifles, Combi Rifles, and CCWs.
Phermonic Ammunition: This ammo wounds against BTS and puts the target into the Targeted state whether or not the target passes his BTS Roll. This also counts as a successful Forward Observer attack!
Corahtar Discipline: During deployment, the user of this skill can assign Symbiomates or Symbiobombs to other troopers or themselves as long as they meet the requirements.
- Symbiomates: Up to 1 'mate can be assigned to any trooper with Symbiont Armor. The trooper gains ARM/BTS 9 and Total Immunity until taking the 1st hit that requires them to roll ARM/BTS.
Beware Flash Pulses that will cheaply strip your powerful ability.Flash Pulse won't affect your trooper with 'mate because it's a Non-Lethal ammunition that causes an ARM/BTS roll, and Total Immunity granted by 'mate makes your troop completely immune to any such ammunition (you don't make any rolls). - Symbiobombs: Up to 1 'bomb can be assigned to any trooper with Symbiont Armor. By spending the 'bomb, the trooper can make a Pheroware attack.
Pheroware Tactics: Pheroware is the Tohaa version of Hacking, but can only target living units that have Wounds.
Nullifiers: Often overlooked. However, Nullifiers can be very handy tools. Once deployed, Troopers in ZoC of a Nullfier cannot use Hacking, Technical Weapon, Comms Attack, or even Sepsitor. However, troopers, weapons, and even equipment cannot be the target of Hacking, Technical Weapon, Comms Attack, or even Sepsitor. This even means Tohaa troopers in a Nullifier's influence, can deny enemy hacking, Forward Observe, Flash Pulse, Jammer, etc etc. This can even potentially deny your opponent some Classified Objectives which is very vital in ITS missions like Highly Classified.
Unit Overview
Light Infantry
Kamael Light Infantry: Kamael are the basic Tohaa troopers. They have pretty standard basic trooper stats.
- Triad: However, they have the Fireteam: Triad rule allowing them to link with other troopers with the Triad rule. These make for cheaper fireteam filler, and they even have a few specialist options: White Hacking Device, Forward Observer, and Paramedic.
- Hatail Aelis Keesan: Aelis Keesan is Tohaa's Dire Foe character based on the Kamael profile. She's a very pricey trooper, but she brings quite a lot to table. She has Regeneration (which gives Shock Immunity), Fireteam: Triad, and Sensor (which allows Triangulated Fire). She is a Killer Hacker making her a, ITS Specialist, and there are 2 options. Both options include D-Charges, Nanopulser, and Flash Pulse (at WIP14), but she gets to choose between either a Viral Combi Rifle or K1 Combi Rifle. Both K1 and Viral are good, but Viral tends to be scarier. Aelis is a toolbox trooper who brings a lot to her Triad.
- Triad: In a Triad Fireteam, she can fulfill multiple roles as a specialist trooper and a short ranged gunfighter. She's pricey, but brings a lot to the team, but make sure she's accompanied by tougher troopers.
Sakiel Regiment: Sakiel are a light Symbiont Armor trooper. Symbiont Armor gives them that extra wound, however, Sakiel are very inexpensive for a multi-wound trooper. They also have quite an arsenal, and a couple of specialist options to choose from: Paramedic and Forward Observer.
- Triad: Sakiels also have the Fireteam: Triad rule, making them perfect mid-ranged point man for your Triads. With Symbiont Armor, these guys can keep fighting even after taking a wound.
Kumotail Bioingeneers: Kumotail have both Doctor and Engineer skills and with D-Charges, they are excellent ITS specialists.
- Triad: In the Triad team, Kumotails need to depend on the other 2 team members to get it to the objective. Kumotails costs 22pts which is fairly expensive considering she doesn't have Symbiont Armor, and is a soft target.
- Chaksa Servants: Chaksa Servants are the G:Servants for the Kumotail. Unfortunately, the Kumotail cannot be in a Triad if she has a Servant.
Chaksa Auxiliars: Chaksa Auxiliars are very useful tools. The 10pt baggage Chaksa are great order filler, and even comes with Sensor and HFT. There is a Chaksa with a 360 Visor, HMG, and Neurocinetics as the Tohaa version of a TR Remote. The last option gives the Chaksa Auxiliar a Smart HRL which can also be useful especially with Symbiobugs.
Tohaa Diplomatic Delegates: The Tohaa Diplomatic Delegate is an irregular 5pt Special Operative. She's got very little in offensive power (Nanopulser, Pistol, Flash Pulse), but she's super dirt cheap and a Specialist. The Irregular doesn't necessarily hurt the order pool because of how order efficient the army can be. Not bad at all.
Nikoul Ambushers: These guys are tough turret pieces to deal with. Nikouls do not have the Triad rule. However, they can deploy in a Foxhole with a fearsome Viral Sniper Rifle. MSV1 can help deal with Camo and Mimetism, and there is a minelayer option with Antipersonnel Mines - adding to the deployment zone defense. The best part is that he has Symbiont Armor making him multi-wound.
Rasail Boarding Team: Rasail are pure aggression pieces. Firstly, their Symbiont Armor has 2 wounds! This makes them 3 wound Light Infantry. Though only ARM1, Rasails come with Nanoscreens, and since they carry partial cover with them they can run out and play aggressively. They don't have the Triad rule, however they come with a G:Synchronized Chaksa buddy with a HFT. They are often taken as Lieutenants for that extra LT Special Order. Though expensive, Rasails are very strong attack pieces.
Kotail Mobile Unit: Kotail have a crazy combination of stats/skills: 6-4MOV, Super Jump, V:Courage, Holoprojector L2, and even Symbiont Armor! The Spitfire choice is a very hard hitting alpha striker, and there's even a Forward Observer specialist option for quick ITS objective grab-n-runs. A few options even have E/M Grenades and with PH12 they can throw them well. Once the Kotail loses his Symbiont Armor, he drops in MOV, PH, ARM, and drops Super Jump and Holoprojector L2.
Kaeltar Specialists: Take 'em. Kaeltar have super cheap Chain of Command options, they have Fireteam: Triad, and they bring Symbiomates and bombs. Symbiobombs are great, however, the Chain of Command options only come with Symbiomates - which are just as great. 'Mates will keep your troopers with Symbiont Armor safe for a round of shooting. Also Chain of Command is an ITS specialist.
- Triad: Kaeltar aren't very great in gunfights. They are usually taken for the Chain of Command as a specialist and Symbiomates. Like the Kumotail, they'll need some escorts to be taken to the objective. However, if you are taking an obvious or aggressive LT, consider keeping the Kaeltar Chain of Command back and hidden.
Kosuil Assault Pioneers: Kosuil are mid cost demolition experts. Thanks to Symbiont Armor, they have a second wound. These Engineers will get your ITS buttons pushed, and can even accomplish Sabotage with D-Charges.
- Triad: Kosuil can cover multiple roles like Aelis: ITS Specialist and short ranged gun fighter. Depending on the weapon options, Kosuil can also offer some board control with Minelayer, anti armor with K1 Combi Rifle, and even a long ranged threat with the Panzerfaust.
Kerail Preceptor: The Kerail come G:Synchronized with either the Surda or Mutan Symbiobeast. Kerail has 6-4MOV -fast enough to keep up with his beasts-. Though very soft with only ARM1, he has Symbiont Armor. Combat-wise he's average, but you're generally taking them for the monsters not the controller. The downside of either team is their larger footprint, and that the team doesn't behave with synergy.
- Surda Symbiobeast: Surda are CC beasts. They are armed with Viral CCW at CC22 and Pulzars. The Surda options are pretty low cost, but they are VERY short ranged. However, the Kerail handler comes with Smoke Grenades (the ONLY normal Smoke Grenades in the army).
- Mutan Symbiobeast: With lame BS11 and just as lame dual Contenders, the Mutan options isn't very liked - especially so since the controller doesn't come with Smoke Grenades. The Contender is a short ranged weapon, and Kerail comes with an even shorter LSG.
Krakot Renegades: They have their uses as a nice little striker. However, there are other troopers in the army that can cover any roles Krakots have. Also it's not necessarily a solid plan to rely on a lucky Meta-Chemistry roll, so there's a level of uncertainty with these guys.
Sukeul Commandos: Sukeuls are some of the best gunfighters in the Tohaa army. Not only do they have an excellent BS13 and Symbiont Armor, but they also have Stealth, Mimetism, V:Courage, and Veteran L1! Rare for Tohaa, these guys carry heavier support weapons and can join a fireteam. There are 3 Forward Observer options with D-Charges (one of them can even be an LT).
- Triad: As already mentioned, Sukeuls can carry support weapons in a Triad. They get the extra burst and Mimetism gives them the edge in ranged combat.
Kaauri Sentinels: Kaauri are great little guardians. They are engineered to deal with Impersonation and Holoprojector with Biometric Visors and SSL2. They're also great as just corner guards. MSV1 helps mitigate Camo/ODD MODs. Though their stats are about average, they are fairly inexpensive.
- It's worth noting that they are the only troopers in Tohaa with STR value. If you want to patch one back up, you'll need an Engineer. Also they are the only eligible target for the Test Run Classified Objective.
Medium Infantry
Gao-Rael Unit: The only unit with MSV2. Unfortunately, the only trooper with normal Smoke Grenades isn't great. Even still, the Gao-Rael are excellent Camo/ODD hunter. They're also got an extra wound with the Symbiont Armor. They're slower with only 4-2MOV (goes to 4-4MOV if the armor dies), so some of their weapon options make little sense. The Spitfire or Sniper Rifle are the more popular options especially in a fireteam.
- Triad: The Sniper Rifle option is great for a small sniper team. Spitfire makes for a solid gunner for any trio. The slow 4-2MOV is greatly improved with the order efficiency of the fireteam.
Gao-Tarsos Units: Gao-Tarsos are a high end AD Trooper. They also have Symbiont Armor making them one of those rare AD troopers with a second wound. That Symbiont Armor let's them deploy aggressively. For ITS objectives, they have a Paramedic.
Armand Le Muet, Freelance Killer: Armand is very expensive, but you an expert sniper with ODD and 2 Wounds. He's got the only Multi weapon in the Tohaa army. Thanks to Symbiont Armor, he can even benefit from Symbiomates and/or Symbiobombs.
Taquel Officers: Taquel Officers are a mid-high cost Symbiont Armor troopers, for either Chain of Command or LT with Advance Command, and they bring Symbiobugs. They have a nice and simple selection of weapon options as well. Both Chain of Command and LT with Advance Command are very useful. The biggest downside is the lack of Fireteam: Triad.
- Symbiobugs: Symbiobugs are Perimeter weapons like Crazy Koalas and Madtraps. However, they hit with Phermonic ammunition - which wounds against the BTS attribute, and is a successful Forward Observer attack regardless of the BTS Roll results. It's the only way in the game currently to Forward Observe in ARO, and this also counts towards the Telemetry Classified.
Heavy Infantry
Ectros Regiment: Ectros are HIs with Symbiont Armor with 2 Active wounds, and 1 Inactive wound. They're only ARM3, but super durable thanks to the extra wounds. Ectros offer a nice array weapons with an even nicer BS13. However, they are expensive. Expensive in an army with a lot of multi-wound troopers for less).
- Triad: In a Triad team, the Ectros are a great HMG platform or a deadly door buster with the Viral Combi Rifle or Vulkan Shotgun.
- Neema Saatar: Neema Saatar is an Ectros character. She brings a very interesting element for your army. She has that same ARM3 (but very durable 3 Wounds), and a great BS13. Her two weapon choices are either a Breaker Combi Rifle/Panzerfaust or Spitfire. However, if she is your LT, she gives you an extra Command Token with her Advanced Command skill, a very rare ability. If you take her as a LT, be sure to include a Kaeltar with Chain of Command for both the skill, and Symbiomate.
- Triad: Both weapon options offer something different. The Breaker Combi Rifle hits BTS, but comes with a Panzerfaust for long ranged ARO. Spitfire's high burst make her the active turn gunner for her team.
TAG
Gorgos Squad: The Gorgos is not a very popular unit. It's very expensive for a TAG with only ARM7, cannot be healed, and a big vulnerability to FIRE due to Symbiont Armor. However, what she brings is an AP Spitfire, a Flammenspeer, and a Pulzar. The Gorgos also brings an extra body in the form of a Chaksa Peripheral which can be armed with either Light Shotgun, Stun Grenades OR Pulzar. Gorgos itself has 3 Active wounds and 1 Inactive wound for a grand total of 4 WOUNDS! The Gorgos is also one of the most kitted out TAGs in the game: AP Spitfire for mid ranged combat, Flammenspeer for long range, Pulzar for crowds, and even a CCW with either Viral or Shock. But that's just the TAG itself; the Chaksa Peripheral brings more utility depending on the option you choose. It's also worth mentioning the Gorgos has the highest BS in the Tohaa army, at 14. The Gorgos can also benefit from a Symbiomate thanks to her Symbiont Armor.
- Gorgos Inactive Symbiont Armor: The pilot of the Gorgos TAG wields a Spitfire with BS12 and she's a Specialist Operative with WIP13. The Gorgos is not a traditional TAG amd does not have the Manned rule. Therefore, the Gorgos's Active Profile will have to die in order for ths pilot to pop out. Unfortunately, she's better armed than most other pilots.
REM
NONE
Skirmishers
Clipsos Infiltrators: Clipsos are very standard TO Infiltrating troopers, but they're VERY inexpensive. 25pts gets you a Clipsos Forward Observer with Combi Rifle and Antipersonnel mines.
Igao: The Igao's usefulness is debatable. They are a Camo Infiltrator with Frenzy. They can be great for getting into the opponent's half of the board and taking out lighter troopers. Stun Grenades are pretty good too. However, they're not popular because of the Clipsos are about the same price, and because there are troopers in this army list that bring extra Symbiont Armor wounds for the same costs of the Igao. There's also not a whole lot of Minelayers or other Camo troopers to play shell games.
Warband
Makaul Troops: Makaul are essential for any Tohaa list. They all have Eclipse Grenades to cover your advance. HFTs for burning Camo/ODD and crowds. They can be brutal in close combat with CC22 and Viral CCW.
- Triad: Makaul have a very important role in a fireteam and for your army overall. They provide precious Eclipse Grenade coverage for your army to move up. HFT and his Viral CCW benefits greatly with fireteam bonuses.
General Army Overview
Even though the Tohaa are very order efficient, their fireteams are easy to take apart. A traditional Core team, and even Enomotarchos team can usually hold their own, but Triads are more frail (a little Warband with a HFT on a suicide run can really ruin your day). Thankfully, Tohaa troopers with Symbiont Armor are very durable. Their Triads are great in both Active and ARO, but it's even better if those Triads can cover each other.
Fireteam Composition is very important. With so many options it's easy to make a bad team. Most trios generally consist of point man with a heavier gun like a Spitfire or HMG, a specialist, and a "filler" trooper (like a Makaul for DTW/Smoke or even an extra specialist). There are exceptions, and there are even troopers that can cover multiple roles.
- Example: Sukeul HMG, Kosuil Engineer, Makaul HFT. This team has a strong centerpiece, Sukeul with HMG, to do all the heavy lifting. The Kosuil Engineer (either one), is a durable Specialist troop; K1 option offers Anti ARM or BSG/Panzerfaust offers a Shotgun and long range ARO. The Makaul gives Eclipse Smoke coverage to allow the team and the army to move without provoking AROs. The Sukeul and Kosuil can benefit from Symbiomates and 'bombs as well.
Many teams follow the Gunner, Specialist, "Filler" formula, but that doesn't mean you have to still to it. Some well known teams include:
- Gao-Rael Sniper team: 1 or 2 Gao Raels plus Kamael Sniper(s) can give you a durable long ranged threats. This team provides strong lane coverage, anti Camo/ODD, and AROs. Gao-Raels are pretty pricey though.
- Triple Makauls: A Triad of Makauls can provide Eclipse Smoke coverage as well as being completely Stealth thanks to Martial Arts L2. In close combat, they will tear up just about anything using those Fireteam bonuses. It's even possible to deploy them unlinked, let them move up using their Impetuous Order, and then spending a Command Token to form a Triad with them after moving up for free. Similarly Neema Saatar plus 2 Makaul HFTs, have a similar idea except Neema adds a strong gunfighter to the aggressive team.
Though Fireteam: Triads are an incredible tool, don't get caught up with relying too much on Triads. Keep in mind some of the incredible solo troopers like the Kotail, Rasail, Nikoul, Kaauri, etc etc.
General Tactics
Gotta Catch 'em All: Kaeltar with Chain of Command is incredibly useful even if your LT is well hidden. Just the Symbiomates alone are worth it. Remember that 'Mates will ignore and entire round of impacts. If your huge Gorgos gets hit by several MLs, Rifles, HRLs, Pistols, and mean words, spending the Symbiomate will cancel it all out. You have to spend it before making any ARM rolls.
FIRE: Watch out for enemy troopers with Fire Ammunition! Take Symbiomates as well.
ARO ARO ARO!: Because of being able to take multiple fireteams, a single Tohaa Triad can be a dangerous in ARO even despite being more fragile than the standard Core team. However, losing even a single can hurt since you lose the extra burst. Therefore it's a good idea to have fireteams watching each others' back. Instead of 6 returning Bursts, discourage your opponent with 8 or even 12 possible shots.
Suppression Fire: Spend a Triad up to the midfield, and drop them into Suppression Fire. This is especially deadly with all those Viral Combi Rifles on troopers with multiple wounds, and it can be easy to do with Makauls providing Eclipse coverage.
Lieutenant Special Order: Remember that using the LT Special Order will kick the LT out of the Fireteam. This is partially why solo LTs like Rasails can but super useful. They don't need to worry about dropping from the team for the free order, and there are cheap Kaeltar Chain of Command options.
