The most fucked-over chapter in Warhammer 40K history. Cursed to die horribly, turn to Chaos, or both in every single bit of fluff they appear in. You think the White Scars got fucked by Games Workshop? Nothing compared to the Lamenters. Think the Chaos Pretty Marines got owned hard by Angron? Nothing compared to the Lamenters. Think that the Raven Guard, Salamanders, and Iron Hands got beaten horribly on Istvaan V? Nothing compared to the Lamenters.
They are truly the Unlucky Marines.
How unlucky can they get?
THe Lamenters were formed during the 21st founding, which many interpret as the "cursed founding", where many marine chapters suffered mutations and other anomalies that bordered on the tolerance of the Inquisition and were mostly shunned by the rest of the Imperium. It's not exactly known why the 21st founding was cursed of all things, but it was probably Tzeentch getting his dose of lulz.
The Lamenters are also a decedent of the Blood Angels chapter, which means they're suppose to suffer from the Red Thirst and Black Rage. However, the peculiar thing is that they supposedly do not suffer from these 2 mutations, making them a miracle among the Blood Angel successor chapters. However, at the cost of this, they seem to have been the target of Tzeentch's eternal dicking, they have been cursed with more misfortunes than any other chapter out there.
List of how hard the Lamenters were screwed over
- Founded during the cursed founding, earning them distrust among fellow Space Marines.
- Were tasked by the High Lord of Terra to partake in the defense against Failbaddon's 9th Black Crusade. They were abandoned by the Mortifactors chapter in the defense of Corillia due to their origins. Outnumbered as they were facing against numerous combined traitor forces, only 200 marines were left after the Ultramarines and White Scars came in to reinforce them.
- The 200 survivors were subsequently lost in the warp after a freakish warp storm appeared. They did however return afterwards.
- Started the Corinth Crusade with 300 marines on hand, 2/3 of them became casualties.
- Were tasked to defend the area around the Maelstrom along with the Astral Claws and the Mantis Warriors after they got back to strength. Lugft Huron instigates the Badab war with the Imperium with the Lamenters and Mantis Warriors are drawn into the conflict. In an ambush by the Minotaurs chapter, they were so brutally fucked over that only 300 marines were left after the fighting, most of whom were wounded.
- Started a crusade after they were given pardon by the Imperium like the Mantis Warriors.
- In their first crusade action, they encountered the Tyranid Hive Fleet Kraken. With only 300 marines on hand, they were presumably nomed by the Tyranids.
Where are they now?
The Lamenters today are now supposedly dead, presumably OM NOM NOMed by the Tyranids. Only 1 Lamenters marine is confirmed to remain today: Brother Chyron, a Dreadnought that serves with the Deathwatch.
