1d4chan>Thannak No clue what categories this should be in. "Tropes"? Maybe we really should have a "Settings" category? I'm sure as hell not sifting through all the articles to apply it though... |

Magitek is a setting aesthetic marked by having sophisticated mechanical devices with magical components. Often, the civilizations and individuals in these settings have all the modern conveniences that we do, just powered by magic instead of technology -- for example, airships held aloft and propelled by air elementals, or communication devices built out of linked crystals. Needless to say, this works best if magic is a widely-available and reliable resource. Common long-running plot hooks for such settings involve mana or some other vital magical resource running out, or otherwise being fought over, and common magical devices turning against their users (especially if bound demons are involved).
Examples
- The Skaven use a lot of warpstone-based technology, especially Clan Skryre's weapons. They are probably the record-holders for the ratio of utility to reliability -- they do incredible things with their engineering (e.g. DOOMWHEELS), but very little works exactly as intended.
- Make a musket with a fire rune that, if struck with another rune, creates a small spark of flame. A "runelock" if you will.
- Get a wizard to bless two stone discs on an axle so that they rotate in two different directions if water is poured onto them, hook this affair up to gearing system on a ship and hook that up to a set of paddlewheels while putting a valve leading to a tank.
- Mystara
- Guymelefs
- Iron Kingdoms. Just, Iron Kingdoms.
