Mordenkainen is an archmage from the [[Greyhawk]] setting, and technically that setting's equivalent of [[Elminster]] (no, he isn't), being the Big Name Adventurer-Patron Wizard. He runs the [[Circle of Eight]], a group of archmagi, and is an old adventuring buddy of [[Iggwilv]], [[Murlynd]] and [[Zagyg]].
