Like many prominent figures in Greyhawk, he's an old PC of one of Gygax's buddies.  He had a cameo in ''Curse of Strahd'' that expands into something more if the party somehow manages to cast ''greater restoration'' at a fairly low level.

Mordenkainen is an archmage from the Greyhawk setting, and technically that setting's equivalent of Elminster (no, he isn't), being the Big Name Adventurer-Patron Wizard. He runs the Circle of Eight, a group of archmagi who mostly serve him as grunt-labor for his plans, and is an old adventuring buddy of Iggwilv, Murlynd and Zagyg.
