Otyughs are creatures that literally eat shit and rotting meat, and have been around since 1st edition.. They tend to live in gross places where there is plenty of food, like sewers and garbage heaps. Otyughs are so infested with disease and rot that they'd probably make papa Nurgle proud, and sometimes they are used as living garbage disposals.
Amusingly, in their natural state, otyughs are actually quite docile and benevolent creatures. It's just that the ones you encounter in the average dungeon crawl are usually half-crazy from maltreatment and inadequate nutrition, or have been actively trained by the dungeon's denizens to act as an attack dog.
Otyughs are semi-intelligent and can be negotiated with by savvy dungeon-goers. Some are capable of understanding Common and even requesting living arrangements. That said, they don't have much by way of pride and will gladly accept being a guard dog, refuse bin, or housepet.
Otyughs also have a number of variations, based on what they feed from and who has been experimenting with them recently. The most common version is simply larger: some Gargantuan specimens have been sighted. Some different variants can vomit rotting flesh on their enemies, others have skin that is more ooze than flesh, and still others have developed resistance to magic. The lifeleach variant drains sustenance from living being near it and uses its sweeper tentacles as lamprey mouths. Other phylogeneticaly similar species have limited telepathy or multiple heads in place of stalks, although these variants cannot interbreed.
