The Carlisian Shock Troops were a regiment in the Imperial Army.
Overview
The Carlisian Shock Troops are a Imperial Army force, with a focus on strictly drilled infantry and tank formations supported by large numbers of drop troop squads and aircraft. They mainly focus on a stalwart tactical advance supported by gunship strafing runs and bombings, with drop squads inserted where they are needed. This includes raids behind enemy lines, dropping in to support crumbling battle lines and hitting enemy formations from unexpected angles.
Doctrine
Carlisian regiments come from a proud and time honored military background, and their tactics reflect this. The bulk of a fighting force is organised into several infantry formations. These formations are made up of mostly autogun riflemen, but are supplemented by infantry-borne heavy weapons such as heavy stubber machine guns and man-portable missile launchers. The infantry take the brunt of the enemy assault, and are used to dig in positions or unsubtly smash enemy formations. Each regiment has one or more tank squadrons that act as mobile armored support, and are deployed where resistance is the heaviest or fortifications need to be leveled. The final and most crucial part of the Carlisian battle doctrine is the air component. It is divided into drop and assault components. Dropships contain a passenger hold to house an absolute maximum of 25 soldiers and their gear. The craft are equipped with weaponry to support ground troops such as heavy bolters and frag missile launchers, and are designed with maneuverability and survivability as a priority. In practice they perform low flybys to deploy their drop troops to the fray, and then fall back to infantry support roles to cover the landing troops, or perform battlefield extractions. The assault component contains a variety of aircraft. Some are dedicated dogfighting craft, and have lascannons and guided missile systems. The support craft contain a bombing bay for delivering a variety of explosive payloads, and automatic weapons to pepper enemy ground formations. Carlisian pilots are a force to be reckoned with, and increase the fighting potential of the regiment massively.
Homeworld and History
Carlisar IV is the primary habitable world of the Carlisar system and is one of two worlds in the habitable "green zone," of Carlisar's mighty star. Being the site of many rich mineral deposits, it was first colonized with industry in mind. Many foundries were created, ecosystems leveled and hab-blocks installed for the new workers. Over the decades, the buildup of toxic emissions, ecosystem destruction and strip mining caused quite a bit of ecological damage, and combined with the ever-growing population of the system the planet was no longer able to provide food for all its residents. Thus the pacification and colonization of Carlisar III was put in motion. Carlisar III was a hot and wet world, acceptable for agriculture if only the hostile environment could be delt with. It took many regiments of soldiers roughly 20 years to beat back the local flora and fauna to carve out an area of the planet for agriculture, but once accomplished the system was nearly self sufficient.
This was an incredible boon during the age of strife, when warp travel was made impossible due to the outbreak of massive warp storms galaxy wide. Panic was immediate and widespread, and in the chaos many noble factions within the Carlisian rulership fought bitterly to gain control. After suffering under the yoke of many horrifically oppressive tyrants, one last bloody revolution took place, catalyzed by the arrival of WAAAGHH Blackgut. As ork roks crashed down around the planet, the cowardly ruling class opted to pull back the majority of the Calrisian armies to defend the governer's palace, leaving the planet to be razed by the vile greenskins. This caused massive dissent among the soldiers, most unwilling to sit by and watch their planet leveled. It was not long before an idealistic young captain by the name of Valmir Aschen defected with a huge portion of the armed forces to battle the xeno. All munition reserves were distributed among any in the populace willing to fight for their homeland, and a fierce war began. War raged on Carlisar IV for 20 years, and culminated in a massive battle in the capital city. It was in this fight that Valmir, grizzled after years of constant warfare, finally met Warboss Blackgut in single combat. The pair slew each other, Valmir beheading the ork even as his own entrails spilled on the plascrete. Seeing their warboss killed demoralised the orks, whilst Valmir's death galvanized the defenders. The remaining five years of the conflict were a systematic purge, with the greenskins all put to the sword and burned in great piles. The former ruling class was dragged kicking and screaming from the palace and publicly executed, a stern reminder to the price of decadence and cowardice. Carlisar rebuilt over the years, and when Imperial emissaries arrived to enact pacification Carlisar accepted, eager to prove their skill at arms in the Emperor's great crusade.
