Turn Undead is the iconic class ability of the Cleric in Dungeons & Dragons. It allows the cleric to direct an unspecified spiritual assault against undead type monsters, forcing them to keep their distance, and potentially destroying them if they are particularly weaker than the Cleric. Evil clerics instead traditionally have the ability to Control Undead, which uses the same system but places the undead under the cleric's control instead of warding it off. This is the main reason why evil clerics have long been seen as superior necromancers to wizards, despite that archetype being more associated with the later class.
