In-joke by Robert Anton Wilson in his "Illuminatus!" trilogy, and a meme among gamers during the 1970's and 1980's. The idea is people are trained not to see the word 'fnord' conciously, but subconciously to be nervous and a little scared about whatever they're reading when they see a 'fnord'.
