Baldur's Gate (City)
Baldur's Gate is one of the largest cities in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons. An independent city-state, it sits on the border between the Sword Coast and the Western Heartlands, on the north bank of the River Chionthar, about 20 miles (32 km) east of its mouth on the Sea of Swords. It lies south of the city-state of Waterdeep, along the well-traveled Coast Way. It is often considered a potential rival to Waterdeep, and some sources suggest that its population is actually larger.
The city is well known, in no small part thanks to the video games that share its name, and it even has two setting splatbooks dedicated to the city and its inhabitants, written in-universe by Volo.
Compared with Waterdeep or Neverwinter, Baldur's Gate is often portrayed as having higher crime rates and greater corruption. In Forgotten Realms lore, the city has repeatedly attracted the attention of the god Bhaal and other members of the Dead Three.
