Infoboxes are useful tools for summarizing pertinent details about a subject, particularly mechanical details that must be avoided in the article's content. They can also provide special or advanced features, like automatic categorization and metadata storage in the wiki's Semantic MediaWiki database.

For details on using infoboxes in articles, read the individual help content on writing different types of articles in the Help navigation along the right side of this page, such as Help:Writing an article about a creature or Help:Writing an article about a book. You can also view the template's documentation by going to its template page, such as Template:Person.

For details on the more advanced task of creating new types of infoboxes, see the Template:Tl template, which provides tools for creating new infobox templates. In most cases, though, you shouldn't need to do this—if you think a new type of infobox would be useful, ask an admin or post in the Discord chat.

Existing templates

Infoboxes are built from the Template:Tl template. A few templates, particularly Template:Tl, can be further customized for specific types of infoboxes. (For example, Template:Tl is a customized Template:Tl.)
