Abyssal Crusade

The Abyssal Crusade was a horrible disaster for the Imperium during the Age of Redemption (that would be the one after the Age of Apostasy). Saint Basillius the Eldar had become Ecclesiarch in 321.M37 and immediately started working with the Inquisition and a bunch of Space Marine Chapters to round up witches, heretics, and mutants, and a good time was had by all.
Well, until a massive warp storm named Dionys came to the party. A ton of Space Marine Chapters found their homeworlds covered by warp rifts and found themselves rapidly mutating, which was, of course, heresy. Saint Basillius ordered the three hundred affected Space Marine Chapters to Terra to be judged. They would henceforth be known as the Judged. Saint Basillius decided (apparently on advice from his cat) that all of the Chapters were CORRUPTED and deemed that they could either crusade into the Eye of Terror or be systematically exterminated. In typical Space Marine fashion, every Chapter chose the former.
As would be expected, of course, "crusading into the Eye of Terror" ended up being an awful, terrible, horrible idea. The three hundred Chapters got split up by a Chaos battlefleet almost immediately and landed on all kinds of wonderful Daemon planets. Most of the Chapters either died in horrific fashion or, even more likely, turned against the Imperium and became renegade warbands.
Eight hundred years later, a few of the Space Marine Chapters staggered out of the Warp, where they were immediately detained by the Inquisition and questioned for Chaos taint. Apparently they had a lot of time to think during the Abyssal Crusade, because they revealed that Saint Basillius (who was, inexplicably, still alive) was actually a worshipper of Chaos.
All of his shit was burned, and his followers were slaughtered. Nobody remembers him. The only reason the Abyssal Crusade is important, then, is that it caused the creation of hundreds of new Chaos warbands.
Sure, they want nothing more than to destroy your society and kill/mutate/infect/rape all your people, but why can't you cut them some slack? It's tough for them too.
