In the galaxy of the 41st millennium the caretakers of the Blackstone Fortresses are more dangerous than any living race.

This page has the aim to make the security systems of a Blackstone Fortress as a playable army in a 40k game. The idea is that of an army that becomes more and more powerful as the more friendly models are destroyed.

The primary inspiration will be that of an actual immune system with all its functionality and behaviour; if anyone wants to suggest something, write it in the discussion page.

Army Rules

Universal

  • Attack Directives: The Blackstone constructs are as flexible as they are ancient and dangerous. A controlling intelligence can analyse a given situation and direct it’s subordinate parts to adapt accordingly. Many times an explorer has attempted to exploit a perceived weakness in a construct, only to find that weakness morph into a strength, resulting in the swift demise of the explorer.
At the start of your turn, select one of the following directives, every friendly Blackstone Constructs unit within 12" of a Control unit benefits from that directive's effect until the beginning of your next turn.
-1: Engagement Priority Subroutine: You can re-roll advance and charge distances for those models.
-2: Impact and Trauma Overdrive: Add 1 to the models' Strength and Attacks characteristics.
-3: Focused Weakness Analysis: Add 1 to the result of hit and wound rolls for those models.
-4: Dark Matter Attack Protocol: Consider the Ap and the Damage characteristic of the weapons the models are equipped with as one point better.
-5: Ambient Light Absorption: Subtract 1 from the hit rolls made by enemy units which target a unit affected by this directive, if the targeting unit is more than 18” away. In addition, enemy units subtract 1 from their leadership characteristic while within 6” of a unit affected by this directive.
-6: Hostile Lynchpin Interception and Annihilation: Units affected by this directive may target enemy Character units with their Assault and Pistol weapons, even if they’re not the closest enemy unit.
  • Cold Machines: These constructs know no fear nor remorse and advance unyielding on the black pavement of their home.
Blackstone Constructs units automatically pass all Morale and Leadership tests and cannot be affected by special rules or stratagems that harm them based on their Leadership characteristic.
  • Gradual Aggressiveness: The central system of these guarding machines is programmed to crush the intruders with an ever-increasing strength that matches their threat value.
During the course of the battle, keep track of how many friendly Blackstone Constructs models you loose; depending on the percentage of lost points, you can select a number of Attack Directives equal to the table below.

Detachment Rules

  • Protectors of the Fortress: The drones and systems of the Blackstone Fortress have only one directive: protect the structure and its vital points at all costs.
If your army is Battle-forged, all units in Blackstone Constructs Detachments gain this ability. Such a unit that is within range of an objective marker (as specified in the mission) controls the objective marker even if there are more enemy models within range of that objective marker. If an enemy unit within range of the same objective marker has a similar ability, then the objective marker is controlled by the player who has the most models within range of it as normal.

Stratagems

  • Enhanced Aggressiveness (2 CP): The main network of the fortress can order a specific group of constructs to enter a state of absolute aggressivity, normally only used in dire situations.
Use this Stratagem at the start of your turn. Select one Blackstone Constructs unit from your army. Until the beginning of your next turn, that unit benefits from two additional Attack Directive.
  • Intruders Detected (2CP): The early warning systems of a Blackstone Fortress are advanced beyond belief. As soon as a threat steps foot within them, constructs can be awoken and placed in pre-planned positions to launch a strike.
Use this Stratagem before the battle begins. Secretly select a piece of terrain not in the enemy deployment zone and set aside a non-Titanic unit. That unit is now hidden in that terrain piece. When an enemy unit enters within 12” of that terrain piece deploy the hidden unit in base contact with that terrain piece. The deployed unit can then either make a full round of shooting attacks against the enemy unit or attempt to make a charge and round of melee attacks against the enemy unit.
  • Signal Repeater (1 CP): Repeater Drones are capable of redirecting the signal of coordinating constructs to the outskirts of the swarm, enhancing even more the abilities of lesser machines.
Use this Stratagem at the start of your turn. Repeater Drones within 12" of a unit with the Swarm Coordinator or Vibrations Scanner count as having that special rule until the end of your turn.

Warlord Traits

  • 1: Marked by the Old Ones: The creatures and constructs in the black stone fortress are ancient, predating the fall of the Eldar and the rise of humanity. But even amoungst these ancient machines there are those who are even older, and whose construction came directly from the hands of the old ones. Such heritage means that these systems are vastly superior to anything else in the entire galaxy, and they show it both in army management and combat.
Your Warlord with this trait always hits on a 2+, regardless of any modifiers. In addition, at the start of the battle, you gain D3 additional command points.
  • 2: Vital Systems Compromised: This commanding construct possesses a deep connection with the main network of the fortress, if such link were to be destroyed, it would send the entire system in a fighting frenzy.
If your Warlord is slain, you automatically lose D3 victory points, but in addition, you can select one more Attack Directive than the number determined by the Gradual Aggressiveness special rule and all friendly units ignore damage received on a 6+ for the rest of the battle. If a unit already has a rule that lets it ignore damage, add one to the roll (up to a 4+).
  • 3: Systematic Coordination: The advanced neural network of this command machine is able to identify the target with the highest priority on the field and focus the swarm's efforts on its termination.
At the start of your Shooting phase, select one enemy unit that is in light of sight of your Warlord. Until the beginning of your next turn, friendly Blackstone Constructs units targeting that unit may re-roll any hit roll and wound roll of 1.
  • 4: Advanced Communication Network: Coordination is the key in responding to an attack and this leader constructs' communication systems are designed to prioritize the exchange of information in even the most violent conflict.
Double the range of your Warlord's Aura abilities. In addition, each time you use a Stratagem on your Warlord or a friendly Blackstone Construct unit within 6" of it, roll a die; on a 5+ you gain one Command Point.
  • 5: Self-repair Mechanism: A cloud of microscopic drones swarms the surface of this construct, repairing even its most deep damages.
Subtract 1 from enemy hit rolls that target this unit in the Fight Phase, and at the start of your turn, this model recovers D3 previously lost wounds.
  • 6: Energy Jamming Emitter: The central core of this machine creates powerful waves of energy that are able to cancel out any type of force or otherworldly power.
Enemy units may not use their invulnerable save while within 6" of your Warlord. In addition, this model can never be targeted or affected by psychic powers in any way and enemy Psykers within 12" of this model must subtract 2 from Psychic tests and Deny the witch tests they take.

Your opponent must subtract 1 from any hit rolls made for non-Vehicle/Titanic units that have suffered a hit from this weapon until the beginning of your next turn. In addition, a unit hit by this weapon can't be selected to fire overwatch in the following Assault phase. Only one model in a unit may fire with this weapon.
  • Kinetic Bombarder:

Units attacked by this weapon do not gain any bonus to their saving throws for being in cover and until the end of their next Movement phase its Move characteristic is halved and they cannot Advance.

  • Thermic Atomizer:
Weapon Range Type S AP D Abilities
Thermic Atomizer (Dispersed) 8" Pistol D6 5 -1 1 When you use this profile, this weapon automatically hits its target. This weapon can be fired even if the bearer advanced in its Movement phase.
Thermic Atomizer (Focused) 12" Pistol 1 8 -4 D6 When you use this profile, if the target is within half range, you can re-roll the wound roll; in addition, roll two dice when inflicting damage with it and discard the lowest result.

Special Systems

  • Advanced Repair System: The capabilities of these repair drones extend beyond any other technology of the Fortress, repairing any damage with lightning speed and efficiency.
Roll a die each time this model would lose a wound, on a 4+ that wound is not lost. In addition, the first time this model is destroyed, roll a die at the end of the current phase; on a 2+ this model is brought back to life with D6 remaining wounds, place it as close as possible to its original position and more than 1" from enemy units. If you cannot do this because there is no room to place the model, the model is immediately slain.
  • Reactor Core Self-detonation: In the event of a catastrophic assault, the main reactor of this construct can overcharge to the point of detonation, wiping out anything standing too close to it.
Roll a die when this model loses its last wound,; on a 2+, every unit within 3" suffers 2D3 mortal wounds.

Other Wargear

  • Over Drones: Hover Drones are small hovering machines, that reside within the Blackstone Fortresses and are unleashed in groups by Drones during battles. Once this is done, the Hover Drones will intercept any attacks aimed at said Drone.
Roll a die each time a model with Over Drones would lose a wound; on a 5+ that wound is not lost.

  • Blackstone Forge: At the start of your Movement phase, a Mother Drone can spawn Spindle Drones. If it does so add a new unit of 6 Spindle Drones to your army and set it up on the battlefield so that it is wholly within 6" of the Mother Drone and more than 1" from the enemy. Alternatively, you can replace up to 6 models lost earlier in the battle in an existing unit of Spindle Drones from your army that is within 6" of the Mother Drone. Models placed in this way must be within 6" of the Mother Drone and more than 1" from the enemy. In addition, each time this model kills a Vehicle in the Fight phase or when it finds itself within 6" of a place where a Vehicle lost its last wound, this model gains one Material Token. At the beginning of your turn, you may expend any number of Tokens to produce a Blackstone Constructs unit. Choose one of the following and then roll a die; if the result is equal or higher the unit is spawned, place it within 6" of this model; if the roll fails, this model suffers D3 mortal wounds. The units spawned by this rule count as reinforcements for all intents and purposes.
-Shockpiercer Drone (1 Token/model): This model is generated on a roll of 3+. You may decide which type of wargear this model possesses based on the model's datasheet.
-Suppressor Drone (1 Token/model): This model is generated on a roll of 4+. You may decide which type of wargear this model possesses based on the model's datasheet.
  • Colossal Behemot: A model with this rule can Fall Back in the movement phase and still shoot and/or charge during its turn. When this model Falls Back, it can even move over enemy models as long as they don't possess the Titanic keyword and as long as it ends it's moving more than 1” from enemy models. This model may still shoot if there are enemy models within 1” of it, as long as those enemy units don't have the Titanic keyword. In this case, it can shoot at enemies within 1” of itself or any other visible enemy unit that is not within 1” of a friendly unit. If the enemy units within 1" are Titanic, then this model can only target them with its ranged weapons. Finally, this model only gains a bonus to its armour save if at least half of it is obscured from the firing unit.
  • Gradual Aggressiveness
  • Repair Protocols: At the start of your turn, this model can decide to repair one friendly Blackstone Constructs Vehicle within 3". If you decide so, roll a die; on a 2+ that model recovers D3 previously lost wound, D6 on a 6.

Options:

  • This model may exchange its two Disgregator Cannons for two Kinetic Bombarders - 80 pts.

Transport: A Mother Drone can transport up to 20 Infantry models and 1 Vehicle model.
